CLOTHES-LINE SUPPORT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM WI-IIRTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnson, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to clothes line supports and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will make it unnecessary to lean out of the window to place the clothes upon the line and which will cause a free stretch within the window when in operative position so that the clothes may be placed thereupon and run out ofthe window without bringing the clothes pins or other fastening devices in contact with the supportlng pulleys.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be strong, durable and eflicient and which will be comparatively inexpensive.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which:

Figure 1 is a vertical section through a window showing the device in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device turned inside of the room and in inoperative position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation looking from the outside when the device is in operative position.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a window-frame and 2, the wall to which it is attached. Attached to one side of the frame upon the outside thereof is a supporting member 3 having suitable inwardly and outwardly extending brackets 4: to which are pivotally secured the bracket arms 5 and 6, by means of the pivot bolts 7 and 8. The bracket arms extend outwardly and are then offset laterally at their ends as at 9 where they are connected together by bearing plates 10 between which is journaled a pulley 11.

The pin 7 depends below the bracket arm 4: and has journaled thereon a horizontal pulley 12 which is adapted to receive the incoming stretch of the clothes line 13. The line passes over the pulley 11 and has its other stretch extending outwardly to a pulley 14 on a suitable supporting post 15.

In order to hold the device in operative position, I secure to the inner side of the frame 1, a screw hook 16 which is adapted to engage over the upper bracket arm 6 and hold the bracket arms within the window as shown.

l/Vhen the device is in inoperative position, the lower stretch of the clothes line 13 is passed around a pulley 17 which is pivoted on a pin 18 extending upwardly and outwardly from the lower bracket arm 4-. Upon the top of the pulley is provided a retaining member 19 which is held in position by a cotter pin 20. After the lower stretch of the line has been placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, the bracket arms may be swung out of the window so that the sash may be closed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described, comprising a pairof relatively spaced, laterally projecting lugs, said lugs provided with alining vertical openings, a vertically disposed pivot member extending through the opening in the upper lug, a second vertical pivot member extending through the opening in the lower lug and having its upper extremity inclined outwardly from the support, a guiding pulley rotatably mounted upon the lower end of the upper pivot member, a similar guiding pulley rotatably mounted upon the upper outwardly inclined end of the lower pivot member so that said pulley rotates in a plane which is at an angle to the plane of rotation of the first named pulley, a horizontally disposed bracket arm pivoted at one end to the upper extremity of the said upper pivot member, a second bracket arm having one end pivoted to the lower extremity of the lower pivot member and being inclined upwardly to- Ward the first named bracket arm, a pair of In testimony whereof I aflix my signature side plates secured to the outer ends of said in presence of two Witnesses.
