Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED C. S'roRns, a citizen of -the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to improvements 1n bag holders, and more particularly to paper bags, and the object of the same is to provide an improved, simple, and efficient device of this character for conveniently holding and retaining a plurality of bags, and from which a single bag may be removed without interfering with the remaining bags.

To the attainment of these ends, and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, and in which the same reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 15 designates the top of a counter which is provided with a depending flange or portion 16, located preferably at the rear thereof, and the depending flange 17 adjacent the flange 16 and parallel thereto. Secured in any suitable manner to the lower face of the flange 16 is a suitable plate or member 18, which is of a width substantially equal to the width of the said flange 16; and the sides thereof are preferably rounded or curved as at 19. A plate or member 20 is provided with a depressed central portion 21, and the front and rear edge of said depressed portion are preferably rounded or bent, as at 22, in a manner similar to the edges of the plate or member 18. This plate or member 20 is secured in any suitable manner to the plate or member 18 to form a guide or aperture 23 between the plate 18 and the central depressed portion of the plate 20. Any number of these supports or holders thus formed may be employed.

A suitable bag holding clip, preferably constructed from a piece of spring metal, may be provided, and this clip is so formed as to produce a coil or projection 24, and extending laterally from said coil or projection are arms 25, the ends of which are deflected toward each other, as at 26, and the extremities 27 thereof are preferably curved and overlap. The convolutions of the coil or projection 24 are preferably spaced from each other, and are so constructed as to be adapted to be brought toward each other to permit of their ready insertion into the aperture 23, and when in position will expand or separate to hold the coil or projection 24 in said aperture.

The coil or projection 24 is preferably inserted from the front of the aperture 23, so as to cause the arms 26 to project toward the rear of the counter. Before being inserted into the support or holder, the bags may be inserted into the clip, and the pressure exerted by the bags will cause the

25 and 26 to yield and assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4; the tension of the

25 and 26 being suflicient to hold the bags in position and to prevent accidental displacement.

The upper ends of the bags are preferably inserted in the bag-holding clips so that the lower ends will project for some distance above the clips, and when the clip is placed in the support or holder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bottoms of the bags will assume a position substantially flush with the top of the counter 15.

If desired, and in order to provide additional means for supporting the bottoms of the bags adjacent the top of the counter, suitable guides or holding members 28 may be provided on each side of the bags. These guides or holding members may be of any suitable construction, preferably in the form of staples driven intogthe A edge 9f" the counter 20, adjacent each side of the bags.

As an article of manufacture, a bag holding clip constructed of a single piece of metal shaped to form a coil intermediate its ends and with the ends forming arms deflected toward each other and crossing in close proximity to the coil, said arms extending for some distance beyond their crossing point and curving away from the coil, the free ends of the curved portion Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the arms being deflected toward each other and in a direction away from the coil, the extremities of the said free ends of the arms being deflected toward and overlapping each other.
