PROTECTING DEVICE FOR VESSELSi I Specification of Letters Patent. j
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
7 Application filed July 9, 1912. Serial No. 708,414.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I,'AMBROSE A. QoINN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and useful Improve-.
ments in Protecting Devices for Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying' drawing. 1
This invention relates to a protecting device for vessels, and the primary ob ect of my invention is to provide the sides of a vessel with yieldable protecting'devices that will prevent 'the vessels from being injured struction, and of such design as not ,to retard the speed of a vessel. 4
With the above and other objects in View,
the invention resides in a novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described .and then of a vessel provided with protecting devices;
claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing,
wherein I V Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan of a protecting device, partly broken away and partly 111 section, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same.
The drawing shows a .vessel -1 havinglthe sides thereof provided with longitudinal fastening plates 2 that have the longitudinal edges thereof bent at an angle, as at 3. The
fastening plates 2 are riveted or otherwise connected to the sides of the vessel 1 and said fastening plates-vale provided 'with equally spaced sockets 4 and equally'spaced v bufi'ers carried by the vessel and confronting buffers 5, said bufl'ers being arranged between the sockets 4 and preferably made of and the springs and buifers rubber. inner convolutions of coiled compression springs 6, saidsprings having the outer convolutions thereof. connected, as at 7 to a strip-8. The inner side of the strip 8 is provided with yieldable buffers 9 that are dis. posed opposite the buffers 5. The strip 8 a yieldablecasing 10, preferably 'made of rubber, said casing being attached to the strip 8' by the same fastening means as the springs 6. The longitudinal edges -of the casing 10 are riveted or otherwise connected, .as at 11 to the longitudinal angle edges 3 of the fastening plates 2. The casing 10 excludes floating debris and other matter that in all probability would impair the action of the springs '6.
The ends of the vessel 1 are provided with are inclosed by Arranged in the sockets 4 are the frames 12 and interposed between .Said frames and the ends of the vessel are buffers 13,-sockets 14 and coiled compression springs 15, these elements being similar to the elements '5, 6 and 9.- The frames 12 correspond with the strip 8 and both are preferably made of leather.
The keel of the vessel 1 is projected below the frames 12, as at 16 and said frames are inclosed in a yieldable casing 17, having the same function as'the casing 10. The top of the casing 17 is inclosed by a, metallic shield 18.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a vessel protecting device that will ultimatelysave life and property, particularly in connection with ocean going,
vessels. 7 c
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodimentof my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modificationsas fall within the scope of the appended claims. What I claim is p I 1. In a protecting device, sockets carried by the outer sides of a vessel,'springs having the inner ends thereof mounted insaid sockets,a strip connecting the outer ends of said springs, buffers carried by sald strip,
the buffers of said strip, and a yieldable casing inclosing said strip, springs, sockets coiled compression springs interposed beand buffers. tween said strip and said fastening plates. 10 2. The combination with a vessel, of fas- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature tening plates carried by the outer sides in the presence of two wltnesses.
thereof, a strip spaced apart from said fas- AMBROSE A. QUINN.
tening plates, buffers carried by said strip, Witnesses:
buffers carried by said fastenin plates and I SAMUEL B. BOOTHE,
confronting the buffers of said strip, and MAxH. SROLOVITZ.
