COMBINATION PENDANT AND LOGKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed. June 3, 1912. Serial No. 701,169.
To all whom it may concern" Be it known that I, JOHN F. KILLIoN, a
a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pendants and Lookets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined pendant and locket, and has for its object to provide an ornamental pendant forming the front half of a locket and providing the back half of the locket with suitable means whereby it is slidably mounted on the back of the pendant front half and adapted to be drawn down below the same to expose its contents. And a further object of the invention is to provide a tubular member on the rear of the front half into which a stem fastened to the back half may slide, and to also provide a Spring in said tubular memher acting on said stem to normally hold the two halves in close-d position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an enlarged front elevation of my improved combined pendant and locket showing the back locket half as being drawn down below the front pendant half. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the front pendant half and the back locket half in its normal or closed position. Fig. 3-- is a detail showing the back locket half, the tubular member in section, and the spring and stem inclosed therein.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the pendant portion of the device which may be made in any desired form. In the drawing it is shown as some-what of a pear-shape with an enlarged lower portion 11 which is made somewhat in a circular form to provide the front half or cover for a locket. The front of this portion may be provided wit-h any desired ornamentation, the same being shown in the drawing as having a gem 12 mounted theron in a suitable setting. This enlarged portion is preferably provided with an elongated upwardly extending portion 13 which in addition to its ornamental shape in forming the narrow extension of the pear is primarily for the purpose of supporting, covering and hiding the tubular member 1 1 which is connected to the back portion thereof by solder or otherwise.
The rear half of the locket 15 is made in the form of the back of any ordinary locket half having a recessed portion 16 in which a picture or other small valued keepsake may be mounted. This half is provided with a stem 17 adapted to extend up into the tubular portion 14. The upper end of this stem is preferably split and its branches turned outward as at 18 to engage the spring 19 which is also mounted in said tube, the lower end of said spring resting upon the end cap 20 whereby its action normally holds the back half of the locket up in its normal position behind the pendant front half. A cap 21 is fixed to the top of the tube for closing the same, and to this is secured a loop 22 by solder or otherwise through which a chain 23 may be passed for suspending this pendant about the neck of the wearer.
In order that the back half of the locket may be drawn down below the front half an ornamental finger piece 24 is secured to the lower edge of said back half to be readily engaged by the thumb and finger for drawing the back half down below the front half so that its contents may be readily observed.
In operating the device the pendant portion is held in one hand while the finger piece or pull portion 24 is engaged by the thumb and finger of the opposite hand, and by a slight pull the two members receive a relatively longitudinal movement and are drawn apart, the stem of the back half forming a guide for this movement while sliding in the tubular member, the limit of the opening being controlled by the length of the stem and tube. Immediately upon releasing one of these members the same is drawn, by the action of the spring, back into its normal or closed position.
The device is simple and inexpensive in construction, attractive in its appearance, performs the combined function of a locket and pendant and is easily drawn apart or opened to expose the contents of the locket.
I claim:
1. A locket of the character described comprising a pendant front member pro vided with an enlarged lower portion and also with a supporting loop at its upper end, a back member having a recess in its front face, said front face being in slidable engagement with the rear face of said pendant member, and means for yieldingly holding said'back member normally opposite the enlarged lower portion ofsaid front member. f
2. A locket, of the character described comprising a pendant front member provided with an enlarged lower portion and also with a supporting loop at its upper end, a back member having a recess in its front face, saidflfr ont face being in slidable engagement with the rear face of said pendantmember, a spring located between said "loop and said enlarged lower end and yieldingly connecting the latter with the front member to hold said back member normally opposite said enlarged lower portion of said front member, and a finger piece depending from said back member.
Copies oi this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
3. A locket of the character described comprising a pendant front member provided with an enlarged lower portion and also with a supporting loop at its upper end, and having a longitudinally disposed tubular member fixed to its rear portion near the upper end thereof, a back member provided with a stem projecting longitudi nally into said tubular member, a spring acting on said stem to hold said back member normally behind the enlarged lower portion of said front member, and a depending finger piece secured to said back member. V
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witneses.
