DAVID I-I. PERKINS, OF MANSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO lIfIE D. F.' BRIGGS COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLASP FOR d EWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,256, dated November 29, 1904. Appiimion ined June 15,1903. serai No. 161,412. (No model.)
To all whomJ 7115 Tit/ty concern:
Be it known that I, DAvID H. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Mansfield, in the county ot' Bristol and State oi' Massachusetts, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement in Clasps for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improve-V ment in clasps used to clasp or fasten necklaces,
IO bracelets, or similar articles, andv more partieularly to an improvement in a clasp constructed to form a combined clasp and locket.
The object of my invention is to construct a combined clasp and locket in the form of a I5 padlock. I
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a clasp having' the form of apadlock, the hasp of the padlock forming the means ot'. clasping orfastening a necklace or similar article, and the body of the padlock forming a locket having' a hinge and means for securing the clasp and locket in the closed position, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved combined clasp and locket constructed in the form of a padlock clasping or fastening the ends of a chain (shown in broken lines) forming part of a necklace or bracelet. Fig.
2 is an inside view of the part forming the front of the clasp and locket. Fig. 8 is a side view ot' the hasp, the shank of which forms the pivot-pin for the hinge of the clasp. Fig. 4L is an inside view of the part forming the back of the clasp and locket. Fig. 5 is an enlarged View ot' the clasp in the open position looking at the inside and showing the back in section; and Fig. 6 is a view looking at the hasp end of the clasp, showing the clasp 40 in the open position and the back partly in section.
In the drawings, t represents the front,
the back, and@ the hasp, of my improved combined clasp and locket constructed in the forni of a padlock. The front a has the upwardlyextending wings a a, the raised` circular lip a2, the tubular sleeve a3, the 'fastening-pin ai, and the picture-retaining ring a5. The back L has the upwardly-extending wings L', the
raised circular lip 2, the tubular sleeve 50 the fastening-aperture 711, and the picture-retaining ring f, and the hasp c has the i'ree end d and the shank c2 reduced in size to form `the pivot-pin oi' the hinge when inserted through the tubular sleeves (1.3 and and secured by enlarging its end.
Then the parts et' the clasp are assembled, the hasp c, in connection with the wings a. and b', form the clasp and the front a. and thc back form the locket. The fastening-pin af on the front coinciding with the fastening-aperture in the back holds the clasp and locket in the closed positionvby friction. The pieture-retaining rings a and are forced into the circular lips a and-2. These rings are 65 constructed with inwardly-turned iianges to limit their inward movement and to lorm spaces in the front and back for the insertion of thin disks of transparent celluloid and the picture or similar articles.
In the use of my combined clasp and locket the hasp c is free to move sidewise when the clasp is open. The tree end c of the hasp is inserted through the ends of the necklace or similar article and the clasp is closed and secured in the closed position by the fasteningpin a". The closingot the clasp brings the hasp c between the wings a and thus preventing its removal from the necklace or similar article without opening the clasp. 8O
It is evident that any well-known form otl fastening device t'or securing the clasp in its closed position could be used and that the form of the clasp could be varied without materially affecting the spirit ot' my invention. 85
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* l. In a combined clasp and locket, thecombination with a hinged two-part hollow body forming the locket, of an inverted-U-shaped pivoted arm forming a continuation ot the pivot-pin and forming the hasp, and means for securing the two parts et' the locket in the closed position, as described.
2. A combined clasp and locket, consist- 9 5 ing of a hinged two-part hollow body with picture-retaining rings forming the locket, an inverted-U-shaped pivoted arm formed intepicture-retaining ring ZJ, and the hasp c having the free end d and the shank c2 forming the pivot-pin for the tubular sleeve a3 and b3, all for the purpose as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DAVlD H. PERKINS.
