GOVERNOR FOR POWER-ENGINES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IERMAN Bunsrn, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Stenstorp, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Governors for Power-Engines and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a governor for power engines, working machines and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a governor which will be of very simple and compact construction but nevertheless reliable and sensitive in function.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a governor in side view and partial vertical section, while Fig. 2 shows a plan view and partial horizontal section thereof.
The governor comprises a rocking body 1 which for instance may be journaled in frames 4 and 5 by means of pins 2 and 3. The body 1 may be rocked in any suitable way, for instance by a connecting rod 6. In or on said body 1 is slidably mounted a second body 7 which in the rocking movements of the body 1 will move outward or away from the axis of swinging of the body 1 on account of the centrifugal force. Said movement of the body 7 may be regulated by means of a spring 8 the one end of which is attached to the said body 7 while its other end is connected to a hand lever 9 which may be provided with a catch 13 adapted to engage a toothed segment 14 for locking the hand lever 9 in the desired position.
The body 7 has a striking surface 10 formed on a projection 10 of the body or directly on the latter and adapted to cooperate with a third movable body 11 which for instance may be journaled on the pin 2.-
The said third body acts on a member 12 which indicates the part of an engine or the like, for instance a valve stem, a pump plunger and so on, to which a regulated motion is to be imparted. The body 11 and the member 12 may be returned into their original positions by means of a spring (not shown). The said position maybe determined for instance by a stop pin 18 which eventually may be adjustable for varying the length of movement of the body 11.
When the body 1 is rocking at a certain speed the body 7 will take up a certain position in relation to the body 1 at the moment at which the surface 10 strikes the body 11. .If the speed of the rocking motion of the body 1 be increased the centrifugal force acting on the body 7 increases correspondingly, and the body 7 con sequently will take up a position farther away from the axis of swinging. Inasmuch as the striking surface 10 is inclined the body 11 and: the member 12 then will be moved a greater or smaller distance according to the different positions of the body 7 or the striking surface 10 thereof.
It is evident that the body 11 may be dispensed with if desired, inasmuch as the member 12 may be so arranged in relation to the rocking body 1 that it may be struck directly by the surface 10 of the body 7. The hand lever 9 is also dispensable and for the same any other arbitrary means may be substituted. The body 1 may be arranged to swing in any desired plane.
The above described governor may, if desired, be arranged to regulate the movement of two or more members by providing the sliding body 7 with two or more striking surfaces.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a governor for power engines, working machines and the like the combination of, a rocking body, means for rocking the same, a second body supported by the firstmentioned body and being slidable to and from the axis of swinging thereof and having a striking surface, and a third movable body adapted to be actuated by the said striking surface, the latter and the said third body being so shaped as to cause the latter to move a greater or smaller distance according to the different positions of the said second body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a governor for power engines, working machines and the like the combination of, a rocking body, means for rock ing the same, a second body supported by the first-mentioned body and being slidable to and from the axis of swinging thereof and having a striking surface, a spring actuating said second body, means for regulating the tension of said spring, and a third movable body adapted to be actuated by the said striking surface, the latter and the said third body being so shaped as to cause the latter to move a greater or smaller distance according to the different positions of the said second body, substantially as and 10 for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HERMAN BURSIE.
