To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT E. MCMULr- LEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed- Changing Devices for Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to speed changers for engines and more particularly to that type of engine wherein the governor is carried by the fly wheel of the engine.
It has for an object to provide means for changing the tension on the spring which overcomes the centrifugal force tending to actuate the governor.
A further object of this invention is to provide a means for changing the tension on the governor spring without molesting the action of the governor and its associated parts.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sleeve upon the shaft of the engine which may be gripped by the hand of an attendant and moved longitudinally upon the shaft of the engine to bring one or another of a series of annular faces into engagement with one arm of a lever to vary the tension of the governor spring.
Further modifications will be apparent in the following specification and drawings thereof in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of parts of an engine showing the governor applied thereto, with parts broken away for the sake of clearness, Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the fly wheel and associated parts showing the slidable sleeve and lever for changing the tension on the governor spring, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modified form of sleeve.
In the drawings herewith, the invention is shown applied to a gasolene engine of the common type but it is assumed that with little modification, the same principle may be applied to any type of governor controlled by a spring in either steam or internal combustion engines.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numbers indicate similar parts throughout the views, there is shown a base' The lever 14 has an extension 16 which nor-s mally lies in the path of an arm carried by the governor as will be hereinafter described. 1
The base 10 has a shaft 17 journaled therein and this shaft supports the fly wheel 18 to one spoke of which is pivotally secured a weighted lever 19 as at 20. This weighted lever serves as the governor and.
when the fly wheel 18 rotates beyond a pre determined degree, an arm 21 carried. by'
this lever swings the leaf 22 carried thereby in the path of the extension 16 at which time the trips 12 and 13 engage and hold the exhaust valve in open position, when the speed of the engine is reduced.
The weighted lever 19 is held against movement by a spring 23 which is connected at one end to said lever and at the opposite end to a. screw threaded stem 24: which passes through a head 25, collar 26 and hand wheel 27 by which the desired tension is obtained on the spring 23. The head 25 has one face thereof ridged to conform with the face of the collar 26 to allow a swinging motion of the threaded stem 24L through the head 25 and this head is carried by an arm 28 of a bell crank lever which is fulcrumed as at 29 to the fly wheel. This bell crank lever has an extension 30 which engages one or another of the annular faces 31, 32 or 33 of a slidable sleeve which has a guard flange 34 formed thereon and a hand grip 85 extending beyond said guard flange. The annular faces 31, 32 and 33 are of different diameters and these diameters vary in accordance with the degrees of speed at which the engine is desired to be run. These annular faces are connected by tapering faces to enable the sleeve to he slid in either direction and thereby cause the arm 80 to ride upon the tapered faces and pass from one annular face to the next. To prevent accidental displacement of the sleeve from the shaft 17, the edge of the annular face 33 terminates in the flange 36 which has an cause the arm 30 to bear upon thedesired radii. It is apparent that "in many applications the longitudinal movement of a sleeve With astepped'or cone face can be made to swing a bell crank lever Which is rotatable about the axis upon which said stepped or cone faced sleeve is slid and thereby varies the tension ofthe spring Which serves to control the action of the governor.
