To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we,'HARRY BERLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, and MARTIN JOSEPH FOGARTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of the Bronx, in the city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Coverings for Hats and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to hat coverings, and particularly to waterproof protective coverings for ladies hats, and its object is to provide a simple and easily manipulated device which can be quickly placed upon and removed from a. hat when weather or other contingency may require, and which shall be adapted to protect the hat from rain, dust, or other injurious influence.

The invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter particularly described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 -is a side view of a hat upon the head of the wearer, showing the lower member of our invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a front view of a hat, upon the head of the wearer having both members of our invention applied thereto, and connected together; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the upper member of the covering, showing the fasten--- ing devices; Fig. 4 is a similar view of a portion of the lower member; and Figs. 5 and 6 plan views of the strip of material forming said lowermember, as hereinafter specified.

It is well known that nearly all kinds of trimmed hats such as are worn by ladies are liable to be more or less injured by exposure to the weather, and that it isdesirable to have ready at hand some suitable means for covering such hats upon the coming up of a sudden shower. We are aware that protective waterproof coverings for hats have been heretofore known in the art, and we do not claim the same broadly, but we do not know that it has heretofore been proposed to provide a device of this character constructed according to our invention.

In carrying our invention into effect, in the embodiment thereof which We have selected for the purpose of description and illustration, we provide a covering comprising two separable parts, designated 6 and 7. The upper part, designated 6, may be composed of a piece of preferably waterproofmaterial, which is gathered up into a sacform, and is provided around its lower edge with a turned over seam forming a string pocket in which is run a drawing string 16 which is preferabl elastic. A slit 8 is cut upward from the ower edge for a suitable distance, so as to permit the cut edges to be overlapped to adapt the covering to different sizes of hats, and) clasps 9, of the glove-but ton type or other suitable form, are provided upon one of said edges, adapted to engage with co-acting studs 10 upon the other edge. At some distance inward from this last named edge another row of such studs, 11, may be provided, so as to emit the edges to be overlapped a greater distance and there secured, and if desired a third or any num ber of rows of such studs may be provided go as to adapt the covering to still smaller ats.

The lower member comprising our invention may be formed either from a straight elongated stripof preferably waterproof material, as shown in Fig. 5, or from a circular strip as shown in Fi 6. In either case the upper and lower e ges are pro vided with seams or pockets 18 and 19 respectively containing elastics 20 and 20'. One of the narrow edges, 21, is provided with clasps 22, (similar to the clasps 9, 12 and 13 of the upper member) adapted to engage with co-acting studs 23 on the other edge, or with other similar studs set farther back from the edge, in case it is desired to overlap the edges further so as to ac-- commodate a smaller hat. Along the upper edge of the member 7 is a series of similar studs 24, which are adapted to engage with the clasps 12 on the upper member for the purpose of securing the two members together.

The method of use and operation of our invention is as follows: When it is desired to protect only the brim of the hat, the lower member 7 is placed upon the brim and gracefully draped around the same, as shown in Fig. 1, the edges being secured by the clasps 22 and studs 23. When it is desired to protect the whole hat, the upper member 6 is placed upon the crown of the hat, the edges overlapped and secured by the clasps 9 and we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:

1. A detachable hat covering comprising a crown member composed of flexible fabric in a sac-like structure provided with a draw-. ing string at its lower ed e, the lower part of said structure being ad ustable by means of a slit extending upward from its lower edge, and twopart fastening devices on oposite sides of said slit, parts of said fastenifng devices being at different distances thererom.

2. A detachable hat covering comprising a crown member composed of flexible fabric in a sac-like structure provided with a drawing string at its lower edge and with members of two part fastening devices along its lower edge, the lower part of said structure being adjustable by means of a slit extending upward from 1ts lower edge, and

twopart fastening devices on opposite sides of said slit ,f'fparts of said fastening devices being at d1 erent distances therefrom.

3. A hat covering comprising a brim member composed of a strip of flexible fabric provided along one edge with members of twopart fastening devices, at its opposite edges with drawing strings and at its overlapping ends with two part fastening devices, parts of which are at different distances from the ends.

4. A detachable hat covering comprising a crown member composed of flexible fabric in a.sac-like structure provided with a drawing string at its lower edge, and with members of twopart fastening devices along its lower edge, the lower part of said structure being adjustable by means of a slit extending upward from its lower edge and provided with two part fastening devices on opposite sides of said "slit, parts of said fastening devices being at different distances therefrom, and a brim member composed of a strip of flexible fabric provided along one edge with members of twopart fastening devices adapted to engage the cooperative members along the lower edges of'the crown member, at its opposite edges with drawing strings and at its overlapping ends with twopart fastening devices, parts of which are at different distances from-the ends.
