fl sfrn'rns PATENT onirica ALEXANDER AV-LTMANN; or.rifiniziinn'risrron'-ri,` New' innsnv.
' INSTRUMENT FOR LIFT-ING HOT "PTS AND Specification of Letters Patent.
Appncation inea March 23, 1911. serial -NaeiariiiiA OTHER UfrE-NsILi Patented Nev, i9, i912.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ALTMANN', a subject .to the Empire of AustriafHungar'y,
residing at 'Elizabethport, in the `county of Essex and State ofNewJerseyfhave invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Instruments forLifting Hot Pots and other Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for" lifting pots7 pans or other vessels and the coversv therefor.
The'object of the invention is toprovide a simple,inexpensive,4 durable and' etiicient device that may beinanipulated for the removal of covers fromipots, kettles or other-- vessels or for the-purpose of lifting vessels without "injuring the users handsand without danger of the device becoming accidentally detached either from the cover or the vessel whichever it, may"be desired to;
lift.
/Vith the 'above and other objects in view the presentinvention consists in' the combination i and arrangement 'of parts hereinaftermore fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings;- 'and particularly pointed ont in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form proportion,- size and minor details without departing from the spirit or s acrificing any of they advantages oftheinven# tion.A
In the drawings: Figure 1is' a perspective view of the invention showing its application in lifting a" cover.' Fig. 2 is a perspee;v
tive view ofthe device 'appliedv to a vessel for lifting the latter. Fig. 3 i's a view-'sim'ilar to Fig. 2 showing the" position ofthe lifter when it is desired to disengage'it'from the Vessel.' 4f is a detailperspective view ofone of the gripping members. My improved lifter is composed tpreferably of a single piece of wire or other suitable material bent in a peculiar manner and provided with a handle 5. yThe wireor other material is preferably bent interme diate its ends to form a bight portioii'lO` from which extend legs 9 which terminate in converging portions 8, said legs and converging portions forming a yoke. Tliee'x# tremitics 5 of the wire orother material are disposed preferably parallell and secured'in the handle member 5, the connectionv (3T-6 between the Shanks or extremities' l5 being in the lform of loops or grippingingers 7.
hingedly or--pivotally secured to said bight portion 10.
To use thefdevic'e `for lifting the'cover a from a vessel the fingers Vlet of the. plate 13 .are caused to' engage under the knob 17 of 4the cover with the parts '9 of the hook resting. against'the annular rib'or rinrb of the cover. In this position the gripping memberl has its rear'endcoperatingWit-h the gripping 1ingers7 'and bytheir engagement therewith to provide for a positive lifting fof the cover when theh'andle 5 isv grasped,
the pivotal connectionbetween the gripping L member 13 A.and the bight portion 1 0 of the. hook permitting#such engagement of the gripping-members.
` Whenthe device is used for lifting pots or vother vesselsthe gripping" fingers 7 engage the'innersurfacenf the vessel 12 while y the fingers ofthe gripping members 13 engage the exterior surface of the vessel, as
shown in FigEZ, withthat end of the gripping member 13 opposite to that which is bifurcatedengaged-under the rim l16 of the vessel. By then grasping the handle 5 the lifter firmly grips the -vessel and the latter may be lifted oif of a lstove or other place wthoiit accidentally slipping from between v the'ingers of the lifter.
eoV
To remove the lifter from the pot. it is only necessary to .slightly turn the same so that it may assume the position shown in Fig. 3 when. it may be readily' disengaged from the vessel.
' From theforegoing-"it will be seen that IAprovide an efficient device for lifting hot vessels and also the covers thereof.
What is claimed isz. w.
' 1. A device of the character described i composed of a singlel piece of wire bent in- .te'rmediate its ends to form a bight portion,
'legs extending from the bight portion and terminating in converging portions, said legs and converging `portions forming, al l yoke, loop portions'formed at' the ends of the converging portions'and terminating in parallel port-ions, a handle embracing the .ends of 'ends 4of theloop portions :parallel to each other,
lfposcd'in alplane at right angles to the plane e .ofthe leg portions and terminatinglin loop lbi'ght portion.
Y. comprising 'ai yoketerminating at one end jin spaced v'grippingingers with said fingers :secured 'to 4,11 device ofthe class.
-a.yoke, rigid' gripping members secured .the yoke, a bight "3the yoke and disposedin a-plane below -the rigid Igripping members and beyond the ;termediate its ends on 'pivoted plate. being "gripping members.
endsofthe parallel portions and a plate piv?A1 otally m'o'funted on the .bight portion of the yok'ejfor cooperation' with the .loop portions. the- .character described, composed of a single piece of wire bent vin'- its ends to form' abight-portion, legsjextendingrearwardly from the -bight ing' a yoke, rigid' gripping members secured `to the yoke, a vmovable gripping member .pivotally mounted on theyoke at a point. be- .yondrtlie ends ofthe gripping members, the 'rigid grippingfmembers being so` disposed with 'relation-to the Amovable member 'as 'to form-astop for the movable'grip'ping mem- `berfivhen, the instrument is in one position and to .copera't as a stationary arm with the moyable gripping member when the instrument is in anotherpos'ition.v
6.. A ldevice of the class described comprising a yoke, rigid gripping members secured to the yoke, a curved plate pivotally secured tothe yokeintermediate the ends of the plate,'said plate being bifurcated at one end and 'being provided With astraight ,edge at its other'end for engagement with the rigid gripping members.
7.' A device of the class described comprisinga yoke, a curved plate pivotally mounted .on'the yoke intermediate the end sof the plate, one' end of the plate being bifurcated and the other end of the plate being straight, loop' memberssecured to the yoke for -engadement with the straight edge. of the pivotend plate to limit the movement thereof.
Intestimony whereof, I, havesigned'my name to this specification in the presence of two `subscribing Witnesses, this 17thv day of ltfarch 1911-.
