FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed August 21, 1909. Serial No. 514,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. TELLER, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota,
yhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in F urnaces,`of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide for the more perfect combustion of fuel Aand the prevention of discharge of smoke from t-he furnace stack.
A further object is to increase the eiciency of the furnace by providing' means whereby a more rapid and complete con* sumption of the gases will be obtained.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the furf nace, illustrating the relative location-of the air ports in the arch or baiiie wall and in the top of the bridge wall proper, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, illustrating the position of the air lues in the top of the furnace leading to the arch or baffle wall, Fig. 3 is a perspective view, illustrating the block or tile, which forms the top of the bridge wall, Fig. 4 is a front elevation, Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the furnace floor.
In the drawing, 2 represents a boiler having a front 3, and 4 the top 'of a furnace, which preferably projects forwardly in front of the boiler, corresponding substantially in form to a Dutch oven. This furnace top has an arch or baffle wall 5 and a series of air flues 6 leading from the forward end of the furnace top through the arch or baffle wall, and admitting currents of air into the combustion chamber 7 beneath said top. 8 is a grate beneath which is the ash pit 9 and 10 is a bridge wall in the rear of the grate and ash pit supporting a tile block 11. This block has a chamber l2 therein communicating with any desired number of air flues 13, one of which is illustrated in Fig. 1 and which extend horizontally through the Hoor 14 beneath the boiler, terminating in the wall 15, which has a flue 16 extending transversely of the boiler and communicating with the open air. Through this flue 16, air is admitted to the iiues 13 and heated during its passage therethrough and permitted to expand in the chamber 12, which acts as a reservoir for the air supply. The block 11 has a series of narrow slots 17, arranged in its upper wall inposition to direct the currents of air across the thro-at 18, which is formed between the block 11 and the arch or baffle wall. The currents of ,air from the arch or baffle wall and the chamber`12 will meet and mingle in this throat and mix with the gases and products of combustion from the chamber 7 and cause a more rapid and Icomplete combustion of the same. Theefffect of this combustion will be to raise the temperature of the chamber 19 beneath the boiler 2. and greatly increase the efficiency and capacity of the boiler. It will be noted that the entire under surface of the boiler is exposedito the heat of these burning gases and consequently a great economy inr fuel` will be effected and the discharge ofblack v smoke from the stack avoided.
` The volume of air admitted to the bridge `wall and arch or baifle wall flues may be regulat-ed, according to the character of the fuel used and the condition of the fire, so that the proper amount of air will be mixed with the lhot gases before entering the chamber be- `neath the boiler.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a boiler, and a chamber beneath the same, of a furnace having a combustion chamber and grate, the top of said furnace having a horizontal air flue therein extending from the front thereof toward the rear, said top having anA inverted arch or baffle wall at its rear end with a port therein communicating with said air flue and said combustion chamber having a bridge wall and a block thereon, a narrow throat or passage being formed between said block and said arch or bafle wall at the front o-f the boiler and leading to the chamber beneath the boiler, said block having ports therein diagonally opposite the port in said arch or baffle wall, and a floor arranged beneath said boiler and having a series of iiues communicating with the ports in said bridge block and through which flues air is admitted to said block, and the ports of said bridge block .and arch or baille wall directing the currents across said throat and causing them to mingle with the products of combustion passing therethrough, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a boiler, of a furnace setting having a horizontal top provided with a series of air iiues, and an arch or baiiie wall having ports communicating with said lues, said arch or baille wall being located beneath the forward end of said boiler, and a chamber being formed in the rear of said arch beneath said boiler extend-V ing to the rear of the boiler, said furnace havin@ a combustion chamber and grate, and a bridge wall 1n the rear of said grate, a
chamber being formed in the upper part of fmunicating with the chamber in said bridge wall,v the air passing through the fiues in said Hoor being'heated and expanding upon entering said chamber, and liowing out through the ports thereof and mingling with the products of combustion and with the air from said arch or baiiie wall.
