DOR-CHECK.
Specieation of Letters Patent.

Application led January 20, 1910. Serial No. 539,161.
To all Iw/iom *it may concern.'
Be it known that l, donn C. A. ANDER- son, citizen ont' the United States, residing at lChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Door-Checks, ot which the following is a full, clear, concise, and eX* act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication.
li/ly invention relates to door checks, and more particularly to liquid door checks, and has for its object the provision of an improved door check which can be concealed in the door, and in which the operating parts have been reduced to a minimum.
Generally speaking, my invention comprises a casing, within which the liquid is placed, 'which casing is countersunk either' in the door or the door jamb, as the caso may be, and within which casing a cylinder is movable, which operates in connection with a stationary piston, means being proA vided to permit liquid or fluid to flow to the cylinder as the door opens, and adjust able means being provided to permit egress ot the luid or liquid from the cylinder as the door closes.
lily invent-ion :further contemplates means whereby the egress of the liquid from the cylinder, in the course of each operation, is automatically adjusted, so that the door may move more slowly, as it reaches its closing point, and when very near to the closing point, additional means are brought into operation, which permit more rapid egress of liquid from the cylinder.
l will describe my invention more in detail by reference to the accompanying draw ing illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, in which- Figure l represents a horizontal sectional view of my improved door check, in association with a hinge, and as countersunk in the door. liig. Q is a vertical'sectional view of Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the valve-controlling mechanism in a diilierent operative position; and Figs. et and 5 are details of construction.
ln describing` my invention, l will describe Vthrough port i7'.
but ot' course, l do not limit myself on this account to the specic terms which may be i employed in connection with this description, as modifications oi the invent-ion will be readily apparent.
Referring more particularly to Fig. l, l'
have shown a door l, as mounted by means of the hinged plates 2, 8, to a door `)amb 4. My improved door check is countersunk in the door l, so that it is concealed from view, and consists of a liquid inclosing casing 5, united by a waterproof connection to a cylindrical tube 6. The casing 5, at the other end, is hermetically sealed by a removable cap 7, which removable cap has a screw-threaded arrangement with the casing 5 throughthe interposition et suitable packing 8. Within the casing l provide a cylinder 9. which cylinder has a flange l0,
through which holes ll are provided. The
flange l0 and the tube 6 inclose betweenY them an extensible or draw-spring l2, the tendency of which is to force the cylinder to the right et' the illustration.
itfithin the cylinder l provide a piston 13, which piston is provided with suitable packing appliances le, and which has a bore l5, through which liquid may enter within the cylinder 9. A check valve 16 controls a port 17, which governs the iiow oi liquid.
Vihen the cylinder is moved tending to torni a partial vacuum therein, the liquid raises the valve 1G and enters the cylinder 'lhe notches 18 prevent displacement of the valve i6. rllhe liquid in the casing 5 should always be of a height suiiicient to control the projecting port 17, with its associated valve.
rlhe cylinder 9, by means ot a union 19, is secured to an auxiliary cylinder 20, which cylinder, as is more clearly apparent from Fig. 2, carries a pin 2l, which pin is rotatably mounted within the cylinder Q0, and is permanently secured to a forked arm 22, which forms part of a link 23, which link is pivotally secured in a door jamb, means of a holt 243-.. When the door is opened, and the link 23 swings around its pivotal support 25, the pin 2l moves with the link and rotates within its support in the cylinder 20, but carries said cylinders 9 and 20 to the left, against the action of the draw-spring l2.V This action permits the liquid to flow through the port li into the cylinder 9. ritter the door is opened and released by the opener, the check valve 16 closes, and the liquid is torce-d through the opening provided in the port 26, which is controlled, in this instance, by a needle valve 27. The liquid thus flowing through the port 26 returns to the casing through the aperture 28. The amount of liquid flowing through the port 26 regulates the speed with which the door closes, and this is absolutely under the control of the needle valve 2T. The needle valve 2T is mounted on the stem 29, which is screw-threaded within the cross-head 30, which cross-head is held in its position toward the right by means of a very strong leaf spring 3l.
rlhe object of thus yieldingly mounting the needle valve 2T is tor the purpose o' preventing breakage ot the apparatus should any one attempt to forcibly close the door more rapidly than the spring 12 would close the door, in which case the pressure would cause the needle valve to be opened to a greater extent against the pressure of the spring 31. rllhe adjustment ot the valve 2T is accomplished by a set-screw 32, which impinges against a cam 33, which cam is a part et the pin 2l, and which cam is more clearly illustrated in Figs. I and 3.
It will be seen that a turn of the adjustment screw 32 draws theneedle valve in or out of the port 26, thus to give a permanent adjustment to the needle valve. In order to obtain an adjustment of this needle valve which shall be automatically varied at each stroke, the cam 33 is utilized, and its flaring faces, as will be seen, open the valve 27, when the door is opened, so that when the door is released, the valve 27 is opened Jfarther than when the door is closed, or nearly closed. As the door begins to close, the set screw 32 slides over the rotating cam 38, and by virtue of the spring 3l, the needle valve 27 is gradually closed as the door closes, although this needle valve is not entirely closed. From this, it will be seen that the movement ot the door is slower and slower as the door reaches its closing point. A projection 34C may be provided upon the piston 13, which engages the needle valve 27 when the door is very nearly shut, to open this valve rapidly, whereby to get added eort so as to give the door a sudden jerk when it is about at its closing point. It will be seen that the set screw 32 can be readily adjusted when the door is Open, as
will be apparent from Fig. 3. I so arrange the apparatus and the cap 7 that when this cap is removed, the operating parts of the door check,-that is, the cylinder, piston, draw spring and the link 23 can be drawn out of the right hand end by releasing the ipin 25, thus to make the device extremely vlarly described the 65,
accessible.
