Letters PatentNo. 104,444, dated June 21, 1870.
. IMPROVEMENT I N AND-STAMPS.
The Schedule referred' to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.' n
Be a known niet I, Jemima-o. GASTON, of oineimiati, inthe county of Hamilton and State of Oliio, have inventedanewand useful Improvement in Sta-inps and 0anoeleis for Post-ottices; and I do herebyde- -clare that the .followingisa full and exact descriptionv thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.-`l
In' the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is aside viewof "my stampl and caiiceler.
VFigure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figure 3 is a viewofthe face qt' the stamp and canceler.
Figure is a side view ofthe toothed caneeler, de
Figure 5'is a view of tlieunder side of the head of the stamp and canceler, when removed from the 11andle, and the stem `of the-cam withdrawn froniftliis head.
` Figure (i is aV view of the endof theliandle when the head is removed, as above mentioned.'
z Figure r7 isa view of the face of the second head, C, attached tothe lower cndoftlie handle, as sliownin tige. 1 and 2. L
' Figure 8 isfa'detaelied view of the cam and its stem or rod.
My'iuveiition consists of the combination of t-wo l heads on opposite' ends of the handle when the' heads are connected bythe cam, steun-or rod, and also -in i the combination of a camwitli the head ofa stamp for holding type, letters, or figures. `ln the construction of my improved post-office sta-nip and caneeler, the handle A is provided with two heads,
B andO, which maybe used for different purposes.
The upper head, as shown inthe drawing, is to have upon its face both a stamp and a caiiceler, but the lower head, C, may have the face of the ordinary stamp,
of any-desired form, and let-ters orfigures.' The face.
Ef the head B is seen in iig.'3, and that of licad C iii These two heads are connected upon tlic handle by lmeans of a rod, D, passing through .the handle and forming the stem of cam E. T
` This stem oirod ,Dlias a screw, F, for tlieattachment of the head C, wliichserves as a nut to bind the whole together, as will now be explainedv in detail. y
Ilpon the stern D is a pin, a, iig. 8,tl 1c ends of which pass into grooves N, fig. 6,'in the liandlc,'wlien the' stem D, 'iig. 8, is inserted'in putting the paits toy gether.
This stem is rst inserted into the head lI3 through tlie hole O, iig. 5, the pin passing through the-notches l? and then in totliegi'ooves in the handle.. Tiius vthe stern is'locked to tlieliandle, sobothmust turn together. Now, the handle C or nut maybe put upon the screw'F, but 'not turned quite home. Then .the canceler and type are to be put in place in the. head 13,and the handle A tuiiiedto 'operate the cam,.and
thus tightly hold in place the canceler and typeor letters. \Vlieii the cam is thus tightly set, the head or nut G is brought hoinc upoii t-lie screw F, so as-t'o hold all the partsfi'oin jarring loose in using the stamp.
- The type origures seen in fig. 5 are held in placeby means of the thumb-screw l in the usual maii'ner.' The motion of the cam is shown in dotted lines Ain iig. 3.
, A clieck-bearing,"K, runs across the face ofA the stamp at the side of the toothed ca neeler G. .This
bearing is elevated'from the general face oi' tlie stamp so as to correspond vwith tlie'rim'faround the face of the stamp. This check preventsjtlie eancelerffi'oin penetrating too deep, and thus injuring the contents oft-lie envelope, aiid it aise prevents the paper from putling into the depression on the face'of the stamp. l
The canceler has asniallpiojection or liook,R,-i ig. 2, which locks under a lip, S, in tliecam-head, and thus prevents tliecancelcr `from falling out, when the cam is loosened to remove or replace the letters, type,
or iiguies. v
The eanccler is adjusted byiiieaiisof a slip or slips -of paper, pasteboard, orfotlier suitable material passed 4into the hole L, fig. 1, and laid under tlie heel of' the -foi the purposes sct forth.
2. A cam, E,'or its eqnivalent,`in combination with a head or heads of a 4stamp for holding a caneelei',` type, lcttcrs,'or figures, substantially as setfortii.
