Description

To all whom 'it may .concern l and new can.
TEOMAseAReIoK, OE PROVIDENCE; RHODE ISLAND.
\ l Lenerspaemla.104,44aemedmme21,1870.
` IMPRovED MAGHINE roar'nnnme sTocK 'ro EYELET-Mscnmzzs.
The Schedule` referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Beit known that I, THOMAS GARRICK, of Providence, in thecountyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements` in Machines for Feeding Stock to EyeleteMachines, of which the following is a specification, .reference being had to the accompanying drawing."
My invention relates to the manufacture of eyelets;
` 1t consists in a novel construction of' a machine for feeding the stock to the machine or dies that form theV eyelet, as hereinafter more fully explained.
Figure 1 isa transverse vertical section on the line.
Figure 2 is is ai front elevation 5' i Figure 3, an end view `from one end; and Figure 4, a similar viewfrom the opposite end.
l Figure 5 represents a piece of tlie'stock or` strip oi' end, as represented in iig. 2,the gear being shown,
` tig.` 2, this series of recesses extending entirely around the roll, and are connected, one to another, by`a small passage-way or channel, which is narrower than the 'recess itself. f
In practice the .recesses are made somewhatoval in form, and are out into'each other at the adjoining fpoints, as representedin iig. 2, the recesses n `being of such a form and sizeas toreceive one of the enlarged portions, o, ofthe strip shown: in' Iig. 5,th e Anarrow portion l of the strip lying in the passage-way between the adjoiningrecesses.
Across the passage-way between thel'ecesses a I make a small V-shaped projection or tooth, c, as shown in lig. 1, and, corresponding with these teeth e, on thev roll B, Iform on the rollO a pair of similar teeth, a, the rolls and their respectiveteeth e and a being so arranged that, as the rolls revolve, the teeth e will engage between the teeth a, as represented` in iig. 1.
It will be seen that, when thus constructed and arranged, if' asti-ip, such as is represented in g. 1,1s fed through between the rolls B, the wider portions o will lie lin the recess mand the narrow partsl willbe caught between the teeth c and a, and will be thereby crimped at those points as it is fed through..` t By this we accomplish two objects; first, the stock 1s fed to Vthe forming-machine or dies by a positive movement,
and all possibility of its slipping is prevented; and, second, the narrow crimped portion ofthe strip yields readily as the wider portions o arel operated upon by the dies, thus allowing the metal to give, or be drawn alike and evenly on all sides ofthe eyelet as Iit is' formed, and thereby makes it of even thickness entirely around or on all sides of its tubular portion, and also around its entire liange, a very important consideration in the' manufacture of eyelets.
To operate these feed-rolls, I place upon the outside of the frame lA a vertically-sliding rod or bar, L, which moves in. guides, as represented in fig. 3, andto this bar I attach a pawl, lr, which engages with the teeth of a ratchet-wheel, P, secured upon the journal ofthe lower roll B. As the barL is raised, which is done byconnecting it in any suitable manner with the operating mechanism, the pawl lengages withv one of Y the teeth ofthe wheel I?, and imparts motion to the rolls', the pawl sliding over the teeth as the bar' L is depressed, by which means the strip .is fed forward between the rolls at regular intervals. p
It will, of course, `be understood that this feedingmechanism 'will be so located, in relation to the eyeletforming machine, as to deliver the strip or stock to the dies in a suitable manner to be operated upon thereby, as is usual in this class of machines.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim is- The roll B, provided with the urecessesn and the teeth e, in combination with the roll C, provided with the teeth a, arranged to Operate substantially as described.-
l THOMAS GARRICK.
