STIRRUP.
specification of Letters Patent. i Patented Nov. 12,1912.l
Application filed November 18, 1911. Serial No. 661,025.
To all whom 1' t may concern Be it known that I, EZRA E. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tower, in the county of Cook and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a stirrup for preventing injury to a rider when removing the feet from engagement with the stirrup.
The invention embodiesl a plurality of connectible sections, one of the said sections being adapted for connection with the usual stirrup strap and the other section being mounted on the first-mentioned section so that the second-mentioned section can be removed from interlocking engagement with the first-mentioned section by exerting an upward forward pressure on the lower part of the second-mentioned section.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view looking at my device from the rear. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the lower section partlyremoved from the upper section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 3--3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view looking at the inner side of the upper section. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower section.
Referring more particularly to the views, l provide an upper section 10 and a lower section 11, the upper section 10 being adapted for engagement with a stirrup strap 12 and constituting a strap section and the lower section 11 being substantially U- shaped to receive the foot and constituting a stirrup sect-ion. Formed on the strap section by cutting away portions thereof, are locking flanges 13 and formed on the stirrup section are guide lugs 14, the locking flanges 13 being adapted to engage flattened edges 15 of the stirrup section, recesses 16 being provided in the stirrup section to receive the guide lugs 14. Rigidly secured to the strap section and depending therefrom are bars 17 having their lower ends provided with cut out portions 1'8, the said `bars be-y ing adapted for pivotalV engagement withy pins 19 formed on the stirrup section, the
said pins being received -in the cut out portions 18. Mounted on pins 20 on the strap section are springs 21 havingtheir free ends.
thereof :adapted to slidably engage retaining pins' 22 formed on the stirrup section. Formed with the sides of the stirrup sectionare' guide plates 23 arranged to aid `.in positioning the guide lugs 14 in the recesses 16. A bracerod 24 is secured to the strap section to retain the sides thereof in spaced relation and a similar brace rod 25 is secured to the stirrup section for the the bars 17, having the pins 19 engagedtherewith and the mentioned swinging movement of the stirrup section disengages 'the locking flanges 13 from the flattened edges 15, while at the same time the guide lugs 14 will be moved outwardly from the recesses 16 and as the springs 21 slide relatively to the retaining pins 22, the swinging action of the stirrup section against the action of the springs 21 will cause the free ends of the springs to slide upwardly on the pins 22 and become disengaged therewith, thus entirely releasing the stirrup section from the Strap section and preventing the foo-t of the rider, inserted in the stirrup section, from being wrenched or broken.
cesses 16, will prevent the stirrup section from moving gravitationally away from the strap section. v
" I claimt-,-
1. A stirrup comprising a strap section,
bars secured to the stra-p section and depending therefrom, 'a stirrup section, pins formed on the stiirup section and adapted for pivotal engagement With the saidbars, guide lugs formed on the said stirrup section and adapted to extend into recesses in` the said strap section, locking flanges formed on the strap section and adapted to be en gaged by the stirrup section, andV springs mounted on Vthe strap section and slidably engaging the stirrup section to retain the stirrup section in releasable engagement with the strap section.
2. In a stirrup, the combination with a strap section, of a stirrup section for releasable connection therewith, bars on the said strap section, pins on the said stirrup section and pivotally engaged by the said bars, locking flanges formed on the said strap section and normally engaged by the said stirrup section, and springs mounted on the said strap section to slidably engage the said stirrup section.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
