Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 14, 1910. Serial No. 582,028.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. BRUNNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kraut-Packs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for packing kraut, pickles or the like in barrels, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device constructed in sections hinged together whereby it may be readily removed from the barrel or held in any adjusted position therein and whereby certain portions of the barrel may be opened up for removal of the material therein with out disturbing the remainder of the closure.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the draw ing 1 represents a square plate which is provided with a handle 2 for manipulating the device and which has secured on all four sides thereof hinge staples 3 to which the hinge arms 4 are connected. These hinge arms are entered into staples on adjacent sides of the leaves 5 which are arranged on each side of the plate 1 and have their outer edges curved so that when lying in the plane, their combined peripheries form a complete circle. Each of the leaves is movable independently upon the plate 1 and each is provided with a pair of alined staples or guide members 6 in which is slidably mount ed the pointed barrel engaging tongues which are adapted to enter the inside of the barrel and hold the leaves in adjusted position. Suitable operating handles 8 are bent up from the tongues so that the same may be conveniently manipulated.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the leaf holding plate is shown at 9 and has hinged on opposite sides thereof the semicircular leaves 10, which are shown to be provided with the barrel-engaging tongues, as described. In both instances the staples on the leaves engage the hinge arms 4 loosely and carry the set screws 11 which engage the arms and hold the leaves in adjusted position. The ends of the hinge arm are provided with hooks 12 which provide their disengagement with the staples.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A kraut pack or the like comprising an attaching plate, a plurality of leaves, staple members secured to the leaves, U-shaped members hinged to the attaching plate and slidably mounted in the staple members, for adjustably connecting the attaching plates to the leaves, and means for holding the U- shaped members in adjusted position.
2. A kraut pack or the like comprising an attaching plate, a plurality of leaves, staple members secured to the leaves, U-shaped members hinged to the attaching plate and slidably mounted in the staple members, for adjustably connecting the attaching plate to the leaves, and set screws for holding the U-shaped members in adjusted position.
3. A kraut pack or the like comprising an attaching plate, a plurality of leaves, staple members secured to the leaves, U-shaped members hinged to the attaching plate and slidably mounted in the staple members, for adjustably connecting the attaching plates to the leaves, and means for holding the U- shaped members in adjusted position.
4:. A kraut pack or the like comprising an attaching plate, a plurality of leaves, staple members secured to the leaves, U-shaped members hinged to the attaching plate and slidably mounted in the staple members, for adjustably connecting the attaching plate to the leaves, and set screws for holding the U-shaped members in adjusted position.
