Another object of the invention is to so mount the slide that it may be readily adjusted and yieldably pressed against the container; and a device is provided with the a1d of which the flaps of a box after having been supplied with paste may be folded without danger of the operators hands becoming soiled with the paste.
The invention consists of the part-s and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the apparatus, partly in section. Paper cartons, as A, are sometimes provided with flaps 2, which when supplied on opposite sides and folded serve to seal the package. This invention affords means whereby a paste may be neatly and efficiently applied to the packages after bemg filled without waste of paste or disfiguring the carton, or soiling the operators hands.
The device comprises a container of suitable proportions forholding a volume of fluid paste, into which may be inserted the flap 2 through a mouth 4 formed across one side of the container and extending obliquely upwardly, as at 5, in parallel sides. The lower edge of mouth 4 is downwardly and outwardly inclined as at 6 to afford a guide by which the flap 2 is readily guided into the inclined sidesof the mouth 5, and
beneath an overhanging slide 7 of substantially U,-shaped cross-section lying over the side in which the mouth 4 is formed, the flanges 8 of the slide 7 embracing the parallel sides of the container.
The slide 7 is adjustable toward and from.
a plate 9 which is attached to the lower front part of the container 3, the upper edge 10 of the plate coinciding with the lower edge of the mouth 4,5. The lowerend of the overhanging slide 7 is formed parallel with the adjacent edge 10 of the throat plate 9 and the slide is vertically adjusted on the container 3 by a screw 11 and wingnut 11* attached to a bowed-spring 12 which maybe forced against the slide 7 to press it against the front of container 3. The spring-plate 12 is perforated at 13 to engage pin 14 on the slide and is perforated at 14' to pass over a screw 15 attached to the container andprojecting through a slot- 16 in the slide; there being a wing-nut 17 on the screw 15 by which the spring-plate 12 and the slide 7 may be pressed with desired force against the container. The wing-nut 11 on screw 11 rests on a flange 18 of container 3; the flange being slotted at 19 to permit the quick adjustment or removal of the spring-plate.
When a number of boxes of a given size are to be sealed the slide 7 is adjusted as to the mouth-edge 10 to admit the flap 2 easily as the operator presses it over the beveled edge and into the fluid in the container.
As the flap is withdrawn the slide scrapes off all surplus paste leaving sufficient, to effectually seal the box flaps where these are overlapped.
A large range of thicknesses of the flaps for the boxes are provided for by the slide 7 and the device can be adjusted to accommodate flaps of different widths, by means of stops 20 pivoted at 21 on the sides of the slide and overlapping the upward extensions 55 ofthe mouth. The stops bear snugly on the throat-plate 9 and the flanges 8 and may be adjusted so that their abutment edges will limit the insertion of flaps of different width and thus also cover that portion 55 of the mouth which may be unused,
paste; the automatic gates 23 closing the sides of the mouth to prevent its outflow, and the operator rapidly inserts the flaps of the boxes to be sealed. The stops 20 adjusted to proper position, limit the insertion of the flaps and as this is withdrawn the bottom edge of slide 7 scrapes over the flap removing excess paste; the gates automatically covering the sides of the mouth. After the paste-covered flap is extracted from the mouth the operator presses it against prongs 26, attached to the springplate 12; the flaps bending down over the end tabs 2*. As the flap 2 is folded the op erator bends down a cover flap 2 which adheres to the flap 2, thus sealing the box.
WVhile this apparatus has been designed especially for use in seed houses for sealing cartons filled with seeds, manifestly it is capable of use for any and all sorts of cartons. The great advantage of it is that an end of a carton can be folded and sealed, the carton filled and the flaps on the other end of the carton gummed and folded, as before described, without the carton leaving the hands of the operator.
By means of the adjustable stops 20 the device is adapted to different size cartons and cartons having different lengths of flaps. The slide 7 is made adjustable to vary the size of the mouth opening and the width of the diagonal strips in the sides; the spring-plate 12 being an important feature, because when tension is applied on it by the wing-nut 17, the lower end of the spring bears against that portion of the slide which is nearest to the mouth 4 and presses the slide close in against the receptacle and holds it firmly against movement or vibration in operating.
The principal features of the invention are; the U-shaped slide designed for regulating the opening of the mouth and side slits in the container in conjunction with the spring-plate 12; also the adjustable stops 20; the spring closures 23; the beveling of the underside of the mouth 4 so that the flap is made to lead up into the mouth and side slots more readily, and the folding prongs 26, which latter enable the pasting operation to be completed with facility and neatness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A flap pasting device comprising a container which has two of its sides and an end slotted in the same plane for the insertion of a flap to be pasted, a U-shaped slide embracing the end and sides of the container for varying the size of the slot, and adjustable stops on the sides of the container for limiting the insertion of aflap.
2. A flap pasting device comprising a container which has two of its sides and an end slotted in the same plane for the insertion of a flap to be pasted, a U-shaped slide embracing the end and sides of the container for varying the size of the slot, and gates normally closing the side slits in the container and automatically opened and closed by the insertion and the withdrawal of the flap.
3. A flap pasting device including a paste holder having a mouth for the reception of a flap extending transverse across one side and upwardly obliquely in the intersecting sides, the lower transverse edge of the mouth being beveled substantially in the plane of the oblique portions of the mouth, a gate or slide vertically adjustable relative to the mouth, and adjustable stops to limit the insertion of flaps of different widths into the mouth.
4. A flap pasting device including a paste container having a mouth to receive and direct the flap upwardly into the container, an adjustable stop to limit the insertion of the flap, and a slide adjustable on the container to regulate the depth of the mouth.
5. A flap pasting device comprising a container having a mouth extending obliquely, a U-shaped slide adjustable over the mouth, swinging, adjustable stops for closing the mouth for flaps of various widths, and a spring lock for holding the slide in adjusted position as to the mouth.
6. A flap pasting device comprising a container having a mouth extending obliquely, automatic closures within the container for the oblique portions of the mouth adapted to recede as a flap is inserted, means for varying the depth of the mouth, and an overhanging slide adjusting the width of the mouth.
