To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIXON E. WASHING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in governors particularly adapted for use in engines and the like, and the primary object of the same is to provide an improved device of this character in which the governor weights are adapted to move independently of their supports and in which the inertia of the weights will cause an adjustment of the governor.
A further object is to provide improved means for holding the weights in position with respect to their supports and improved means whereby the position of the weights with respect to their supports may be varied.
A further object is to provide improved means for yieldingly holding the weights in position and improved means whereby the tension of the said holding means may be varied.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, durable and cheap in construction, and elfective, efiicient and positive in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating the embodiment of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of an improved device of this character in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplification of the invention the numeral 10 designates the usual rotatable support for the governor arms, to which is secured adjacent the upper end thereof the cross head 11. connected by one extremity to the cross head 11 in the ordinary and usual manner.
The weights 13 may be of any desired configuration but are preferably of the ball type having an extended neck or portion 14 projecting from the weights and each of the Weights is provided ing into its body portion and opening through the neck or extended portion 14. The opposite walls of the recess adjacent the extremity of the neck or portion 14 are preferably beveled as at 16, for a purpose to be set forth.
The free extremity 17 of each of the arms or upper links 12 is preferably tapered as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and these extremities project into the respective recesses 15 of the weights 13. Each weight is pivotally connected to its arm or link 12 in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of a sectional pin, one section 18 thereof being provided with a reduced extremity 19 and the other section 20 with a recess 21 to receive the reduced extremity 19. These sections are passed respectively through opposite walls of the recess 15 of the weight 13 so that the heads of the respective sections will rest against the outer face of the walls of the recess.- A portion of the arm 12 through which the pivot pin passes is preferably enlarged as at 22 for reinforcing or strengthening the arm at this point.
Pivotally connected to each of the weights 13, preferably the neck or extended portion 14 at points adjacent the point of pivotal connection of the weight with the arm 12 is a yoke 23, the arms 24 of which engage the sides of the neck or portion 14. The arms are pivotally secured in position by means of pivot pins 25 which pass through the arms of the yoke and into the neck, or portion 14 of the weight. If desired, the free extremity of each of the pivot pins 25 may be reduced as shown and screw-threaded for the reception of nuts 26 which hold the yoke against displacement. The yoke 23 is secured to the weight 13 on pivots arranged transversely to the pivot which connects the weights with the arms and supported by the yoke is a sleeve or tubular portion 27, which is provided with internal screw threads 28.
The lower links 29 of the governor are pivotally connected by one extremity to a with a recess 15 extendcollar which is secured to the slidable member 31 of the governor in the ordinary and usual manner. The free extremity of each of the links 29 is screw-threaded as at 32 and is adapted to enter and engage the screw thread 28 in the respective sleeve or tubular portion 27 on the yoke 23 so that when the yoke is axially rotated, the engaging screw-threaded portions of the sleeve 27 and the extremity of the link 29 will cause the said extremity to be moved into or out of the sleeve or tubular portion 27 to shorten or lengthen the link 29.
Any suitable means may be provided for holding the weight 13 in position with respect to the supporting arm 12 and for this purpose there may be provided suitable elastic members 33 in the form of coil springs or the like, two of which are preferably employed, one on each side of the arm 12 and with one extremity respectively engaging opposite faces of the extremity of the arm and the other extremities respectively engaging adjustable members 34 in the form of nuts having screw-threaded peripheries which engage suitable screw threads 35 in the apertures 36 arranged at diametrically opposite points in the weight and which communicate with the recess 15 so that a portion of each of the elastic members 33 will project into the recesses 36 to engage the respective nuts 34. If desired, these nuts 34 may be provided with key seats 37 by means of which the nuts may be adjusted to vary the tension of the elastic members 33. hen the nuts 33 are adjusted so that the tension of the elastic members 33 will be uniform, the extremity 17 of the arm 12 will be in a position to permit the weight 13 to' move the same distance in either direction.
With this improved construction, it will be apparent that when the governor is rotated in the ordinary and well known manner, the weight 13 will be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force which will adjust the member 31 on the member 10 in the ordinary and well known manner, but as the weights 13 are capable of an independent movement with respect to the arms or upper links 12, the inertia of the weights will impart an axial rotation to the sleeve 27 to lengthen or shorten the link 29 according to the speed of the governor. By thus lengthening or shortening the link, the governor will be automatically adjusted to cause the same to operate quickly upon the member to be shifted. With this improved construction it will also be apparent that the inertia of the weights will compensate the load fluctuations without changing the horizontal plane of operation of the governor weights, thereby producing a compact arrangement whereby the operation or shifting of the member to which the governor is connected will not rely solely upon the centrifugal force generated by the governor to throw the weights into a higher horizontal plane. By the provision of the inclined portions 16 of the walls ofthe recess, the weights will be permitted to move freely about their pivots without coming in contact with the extremity of the arm 12.
The recess 15 within the weights may be of any desired size, but it is preferable to provide a recess which is of a width only slightly greater than the width of the ex tremity of the arm, and the lower portion of the recess in which the extremity 17 moves is preferably enlarged, as shown, to permit a free movement of the weight with respect to the arm.
In order that the invention might be fully understood, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described; but
What I claim as new is:
1. A governor including a pivoted member, a. weight pivoted to the member and movable in a plane transverse to the plane of movement of the member, means whereby the inertia of the weight will automatically adjust the governor, and means directly tending normally to overcome the pivotal movement of the weight with respect to said pivoted member.
2. A governor including a pivotally supported arm, a weight mounted upon the free end of the arm for bodily movement with the arm and for independent movement with respect thereto, said independent movement being effected by inertia of the weight, and means whereby the said independent movement of the weight will adjust the governor.
3. A governor including a pivotally supported arm, a weight mounted upon the free end of the arm, means whereby the centrifugal force generated by the governor will adjust the governor, means whereby the inertia of the weight may be exerted in a plane tansverse to the plane of movement of the arm to further adjust the governor, and means tending normally to overcome the last said adjustment of the governor.
4. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for bodily movement with and for independent movement with respect thereto and in a plane at an angle to the plane of movement of the support, whereby the inertia of the weight will move the latter with respect to the support, means whereby said independent movement of the weight will adjust the governor and means tending normally to hold the weight against such independent movement.
5. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for pivotal movement in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the said support, whereby the inertia of the weight will cause the same to move independently of the support, means whereby said independent movement will adjust the governor, and yielding means housed. within the weight for normally holding the weight against said independent movement.
6. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for pivotal movement in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the said support, whereby the inertia of the weight will cause the same to move independently of the support, means whereby said independent movement will adjust the governor, yielding means housed within the weightfor normally holding the weight against said independent movement, and means for varying the tension of the said yielding means.
7. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for pivotal movement in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the said support, whereby the inertia of the weight will cause the same to move independently of the support, means whereby said independent movement will adjust the governor, means for normally holding the weight against said independent movement, the last said means including oppositely disposed elastic members housed within the weight, and means for varying the tension of said members.
8. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for pivotal movement in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the said support, whereby the inertia of the weight will cause the same to move independently of the support, means whereby said independent movement will adjust the governor, means for normally holding the weight against said independent movement, the last said means including oppositely dis posed elastic members housed within the weight and arranged between the weight and the said support remote from the point of their pivotal connection, and means for varying the tension of the said elastic members.
9. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for movement independently with respect to the support and in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the support, a shiftable member, a link connecting said member with the weight, means whereby the inertia of the weight will adjust the link to shift the said member and means tending normally to hold the Weight against such independent movement.
10. A governor including a pivoted sup port, a weight mounted upon the support for independent movement with respect to the support in a plane transverse to the plane Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the of pivotal movement of the support, a shiftable member, a sectional link, one of the sections being connected to the weight and the other section to the said shiftable memher, and means whereby the inertia of the weight will axially rotate one vof the link sections to automatically lengthen or shorten the link to shift the said member.
11. A governor including a pivoted support, a weight mounted upon the support for independent movement with'respect to the support in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the support, a shiftable member, a sectional link, said link sections having a threaded connection, one of the sections having a pivotal connection with the said shiftable member and the other section having a pivotal connection with the weight, whereby the inertia of the weight will axially rotate the link section connected thereto to adjust the linksections with respect to each other to shift the said member.
12. A governor including a member pivotally supported at one end, a weight provided with an open recess into which the free end of the member projects, means pivotally connecting the weight to the sup port for movement in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the support, elastic means disposed between the weight and the support for normally holding the weight in a predetermined position with respect to the support against the ten sion of which the weight is adapted to be adjusted by the inertia thereof, and means whereby the inertia of the weight willautomatically adjust the governor.
18. A governor including a member pivotally supported at one end, aweight provided with an open recess into which the free end of the member projects, means pivotally connecting the weight to the support for movement in a plane transverse to the plane of pivotal movement of the support, elastic means disposed within the recess between the extremity of the said member and the wall of the recess for normally holding the weight in a predetermined position with respect to the support and against the tension of which the weight is adapted to be adjusted by the inertia thereof, means whereby the inertia of the weight will automatically adjust the former, and means whereby the tension of the said elastic member may be varied.
