Description

N-PETEHS. PHDTo-LITMOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON n c JABEz n; BosTWIoK,
new ein.
0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Leners Patent No. 104,413, daten .non 21,1870.
rMPRovnMnNrr 1N NozzLE `Arm snALING-CAP PoR SHEET-METAL'. cANs.,
The Schedule referred to in `these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, JABnz Ar Bos'rwicx, of the city, county, and
Stateof New York, have invented a new`and `improved Combination of"4 Nozzles and` Sealing- Caps with Metallic Vessels, offwbich the 4following is a specification.
My invention relates tothe combination cfa fianged nozzle'or thimble with "a metallic vessel. by inserting said nozzle 4through an aperture in the top of the vessel, 'tafproject therein, having a flange or shoulder formedthereon, to rest upon the rim oi' the aperture,
` `and thenfastening and securing it by means of a ine- `tallic cap, fitting closely. over the same, and soldered down upon the vessel; andialso `to the combination ot a plug or of a faucet with said nozzle when it has been opened by cutting away that portion of the cap wliich covers itsopeningyithe object of my invention being to obtainv a cheapand ready mode of fitting oil-cans and other vessels of ccmparatively thin metalwith. sealedrnozzles, which, when opened, shall be ready to freceive and r'hold securely asutable-plugor a faucet.4 In the accompanying drawingf- I Figure lis a top View of a corner of a metallic vessel provided with a nozzle secured and sealed byan A outer metallic cap` n Figure 2 being a central vertical section thereof in the line :u n: of fig,- 1.`
i Figure 3 is a similar central section in line y y of igl, representing the sealin and fastening-cap, when cut out centrally, `ready forthe reception of a plug to tit into vthe nozzle, and reclose the same.
p Figure 4 represents' 1in elevation one forni of faucet adaptedto fit into the open nozzle in the.place of a plug. l y. l A, gs 2 and 3,",rer`n'esents` a. cylindrical nozzle 0r thimble, provided` with a circumferential oi'set or flange, a at its upper cndp' |Ihis nozzle or thimble' may be threaded interiorly,V to receive a counterpartthreaded plug, B, fig. 3, to elosethe same when opened, or the tl'ireaded endof a [faucet,r0, fig. 4, through which to draw the contents of the vessel to whiclithe nozzle is secured.
D is a metallic'vessehto -which the nozzle is to be attached, for vthe purpose `of `facilitating the removal of its'contents, l`andof closing the same when' it has `once been opened;A
aperture corresponding in diameter with the external diameter of` the nozzlel is first pierced in the vessel, through which it may be filled. v
` After the vessel 'has ybeen duly filled, the nozzle is `inserted into the aperture, so that its shoulder or just equal yto the thickness 'of the fiange or oiset a, is placed upon its outer end, and soldered down securely upon'the vessel D, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3.
pleteiy closing and sealing the opening through the nozzle A into the can D, and also of securing the noz1 zle firmly in place upon the can.
Y \Vhen it is required to open the can, the central portion of the cap lil is cut away, so as to uncover and open fully the aperture in the nozzle, as shown in' iig. 3, leaving, however, an annular rim, e, which, bearing upon the flange a, will still` retain and secure the open nozzle in its place. i f
After being thus opened, the nozzle may be fitted witllra faucet,-G, to facilitate the withdrawal of the liquid therein, or be closed with a plug, B.'
Although I prefer' to use a threaded nozzle to receive 'a screw-threaded plug, I contemplate `making the same plain, to be fixed and held therein by friction alone. i
A small vent-turbe, G, fig. 2, maybe inserted in the the same.
-` I claim as my invention- The combination of an extended flanged nozzle, formed substantially as herein-described, with a metallic vesselby means of an outer sealing and fastening-cap-and rim, secured to the vessel over and upon the purpose herein set forth; l Y i J. A. BOSTWICK..
Witnesses:
GaAs. W. Jonas, W. H. TILFonD.
In using the detached 4nozzle A with a vessel, D, an
flange a shall rest upon and be supported by the rim thereof, as clearly illustratedfin figs. 2 and 3, and a metallic cap, E, closely fitting thereon, and of a h eight This cap E thus serves the double `purpose of comneck of the nozzle,A to facilitate a discharge through `the outerfendot" the nozzle, substantially as and for
