ADJUSTABLE BED.

To all whom it may concamf Be it known that I, EDWARD J. RoBisoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates providing, as its general object, a bed which is adapted for use mo-re particularly in hospitals and the like and so constructed as to provide a mattress supporting frame which can be raised or lowered at either end, said frame being pivotally supported medially of the head and foot members of the bedstead.

The invention also comprises means carried by the frame for securely retaining the same in its adjusted position.

Vith the above stated objects in view, it will be understood, of course, that the essenm tial features of the invention are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangement, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the body constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, the posts of the bed being shown in sections. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises the usual head and foot members A and B of a bedstead comprising the ordinary well known posts 4. Connected to the lower ends of the posts 4 are the end and side brace rods 5 and 6 respectively and connecting the posts 4 adjacent their upper ends are end brace rods 8. Oblique rails 9 are connected to the posts 4 and extend longitudinally of the bedstead and are provided niedially thereof with pin receiving eyes 10 fora purpose that will be hereinafter more fully described.

The mattress supporting frame proper comprises the side rails 11 and end rails 12 connected by collars 13 which loosely engage the ends of said rail and which are adapted to slidably engage the bed posts 4. The end rails 12 of the framer are provided longitudinally thereof with guard rails 14 which prevent a mattress from sliding off of the Specification of Letters Patent.

The side rails 11 are supported medially thereof by a transverse bar 15 lwhich eX- tends beneath said rails and is supported in a manner presently described. The transverse bar 15 is provided in its ends with apertures 16 through which are passed vertical pins 17, said pins also engaging the eyes 10 of the oblique rails 9. Coil springs 18 surround said pins between the transverse bar 15 andthe eyes 10 and said springs actin the same manner as the ordinary bed springs.

The ends of the mattress supporting frame are detachably secured to the bed posts 4 by means of the diverging rods 19, the free ends of which are adapted to engage in one of a number of vertically alined lateral openings 20 in each of the posts 4. The inner fixed ends of the rods 19 are provided with eyes 21 which loosely engage the ends of a horizontally pivoted lever 22 which is fulcrumed as indicated at 23 to the transverse bar 15 intermediate the ends thereof, the liXed ends of the rods 19 which are connectedl to the head of the bedstead being connected to one end of said lever and the rods 19 extending to the foot of the bedstead adjusted to an in- `being. connected to the other end of said lever. In order to retain the rods 19 in engagement with the openings 20 in the posts 4, said rods are provided adjacent their outer free ends with abutment plates 24 to which are secured one end of a spring 25, the other end of said spring loosely engaging the collar 18.

Connecting the end brace rods 5 and 8 inedially thereof are the vertical rods 26 which are provided with spaced guide bearings 27. Slidably mounted in the bearings 27 are operating rods 28. Tn order to actuate the lever 22 to release the diverging rods 19 from the posts 4 so that the frame can be adjusted to an inclined position, there are provided rods 29, one of said rods having one end thereof loosely engaging one end of the actuating lever 22 and the other end loosely engaging the lower end of the operating rods 28 carried by the head of the bedstead. The other rod 29 is similarly connected to the other end of the actuating lever 22 and the operating rods 28 carried by the foot of the bedstead. It will thus be seen that upon pushing down the rods 28 the actuating lever Will be caused to oscillate and thereby withdraw the free ends of the diverging rods 19 from the apertures in the posts 4 thus permitting the frame to be moved to an inclined position and when said frame is in the desired position the rods 19 can then be again passed through the collars 13 into engagement with the posts.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is v1. A bedstead comprising posts, oblique rails connecting said posts, a transverse bar yieldably supported by said rails, a frame supported medially of its ends by said bar, and means carried by said bedstead and transverse bar for adjusting said frame to an inclined position.

2. A bedstead comprising posts, oblique rails carried thereby, a transverse bar yieldably supported upon said rails, a frame resting upon said bar, and means for detachably securing the ends of said frame to said posts.

3. A bedstead comprising posts, said posts being provided with a plurality of vertically alined openings, oblique rails carried by said posts, a frame supported by said rails medially thereof, and means carried by said bedstead and supported by said oblique rails for detachably engaging said frame to an inclined position.

t. A bedstead comprising posts, oblique rails carried thereby, a frame supported by said rails, said frame comprising side and endy rails, collars loosely engaging the ends of said side and end rails and surrounding said posts, and means carried by said bedstead and engaging said collars and posts for maintaining said frame in an adjusted position.

5. A bedstead comprising posts having vertically alined apertures therein, oblique rails carried by said posts, a transverse bar yieldably supported by said rails medially thereof, a frame mounted upon said transverse bar, collars loosely engaging t-he corners of said frame and slidably engaging said posts, a lever pivotally connected to said transverse bar, diverging rods carried by each end of said lever, the free ends of said rods being adapted to detachably engage the openings in said posts, and means carried by said rods for retaining the same in engagement with said openings.

6. A bedstead comprising posts, oblique rails connecting said posts, a transverse bar yieldably supported by said oblique rails, a frame resting lupon said transverse bar, an actuating lever pivoted to said bar, means carried by each end of said lever for detachably securing the ends of said frame in an adjusted position, and means carried by the ends of said bedstead and connected to said actuating lever for oscillating the same.
