To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD J. RoBIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to bedsteads, and has for an object to provide an adjustable bedstead wherein various parts can be adjusted to the convenience and comfort of a patient, the bedstead being preferably adapted for use in hospitals or the like, and consisting of anovel construction whereby patients can conveniently repose upon the bedstead in various positions without straining their muscles or being forced to assume and retain an unnatural attitude,

The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a structure of simple and durable construction and which includes a head section and a foot section, either of which can be adjusted relatively to the other and whereby the head section or foot section can be moved out of the plane of the other section or both can be operated to lie in the same plane.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of thebedstead, the dotted lines denoting different posit-ions of the head and foot sections; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the bedstead; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, taken substantially on the line 33 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an end view; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view, showing in detail the construction of one of the rack members; Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 66 in Fig. 5.

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a frame 10 consisting of a. plurality of similar triangularly shaped side members 11 connected by end pieces 12, a transverse rod 13 being-arranged to connect the side members 11 at their apices 14 and having mounted to swing thereon a plurality of hangers 15, one pair of said hangers having rigid connection with the inner end of a head section 16 and the other pair of said hangers having rigid connection with the inner end of a foot section 17.

- The head and foot sections 16 and 17 are substantially similar in shape and construction and each form a frame 18 provided with diagonal braces 19 connected attheir points of intersection with a horizontal brace 20 having connection with an end of the frame 18. I

A channel shaped member 21 constituting a suitable track connects the end pieces 12 of the frame 10 and is arranged to extend centrally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the frame.

Arranged to lie within the channel shaped member 21 are a plurality of relatively spaced similar but independent rack members 22 and 23, each being engaged by a plurality of expansible springs 24 encircling bolts 25 having connection with the rack members 22 and 23 and slidable'on the channel member 21. Rods 26 and 27 have pivotal connection with the head and foot sections 16 and 17 respectively and also have pivotal connection with slides 28 and 29 respectively, mounted to operate over the casing 21 andiwhich constitutes a track for the slides, each of said slides comprising a casing 30 in which is mounted a pawl 31, with the pawl adapted to normally engage the teeth of the respective rack bar over which the slides operate to lock either the head or foot section in rigid position relatively to the frame 10 of the bedstead, as will be readily understood by referring to the views, it being apparent that the springs 24 tend to move the rack members 22 and 23 within the casing 21 and hold the rack members in engagement with the pawl, it being understood that the slide 28 is adapted for used in connection with the rack member 22 of thehead section 16 and the slide 29 for use in connection with the rack member 23 of the footsection 17.

Each rack member carries a depending lug 32 projecting through an opening 33 in the casing and the lug of the rack member 22 has pivotal connection with an actuating rod 33' between the ends of the said rod, the outer end of the rod having pivotal connection with the rigid casing 21, as will be seen by referring to. the views. Similarly the lug of the rack member 23 has pivotal connection with an actuating rod 84, between the ends of the actuating rod; with the outer end of the actuating rod having pivotal connection with the rigid member 21. The inner end of the rod 33 has a pin and slot connection with the inner end of a foot pedal mounted to swing on the frame 10 and similarly the inner end of the rod 34 has a pin and slot connection with a foot pedal 36 mounted to swing adjacent the foot pedal 35 and independently thereof. Now as mentioned heretofore, the rack members 22 and 23 normally engage the respective pawls of the slides 28 and 29, thus, as will be readily apparent, holding the head and foot sections in rigid position relatively to the frame 10, this being accomplished through the medium of the rods 26 and 27 connecting the respective head and foot sections of the slides 28 and 29, as mentioned heretofore.

Now if it is desired to either elevate or swing downwardly the head section 16, a downward pressure is exerted on the foot pedal 35, thus through the medium of the rod 33 moving the rack member 22 against the action of the springs 24 and outof engagement with the locking pawl 31, thus freeing the head section from locked en gagement with the frame and permitting the operator to then swing the head section downwardly or upwardly as he chooses, after which the downward pressure on the foot pedal35 is released, thus causing the springs 24, to actuate and return the rack member 22 into locked engagement with the pawl 31, the .head section being now in the desired position and again rigid relatively to the frame 10. Similarly, when the foot pedal 36 is actuated the rack member 23, through the medium of the rod 34, will be moved out of locked engagement with the pawl of the slide 29, thus permitting the operator to swing the foot section 17 down wardly or upwardly as he chooses, after which the downward pressure on the foot pedal is released and the rack member 22, returning to normal position and into locked engagement with the pawl of the slide 29, will hold and lock the foot section relatively to the frame 10. As shown'in the views, the head and foot sections when in normal position lie in substantially the same horizontal plane and through the medium of the mechanism heretofore described it will be apparent that either-the head or foot section can be moved independently of the other so as to move one of the sections. out of the hori zontal plane of the other or move both sections simultaneously. above or below their normal positions so that they will not lie in the same'plane or will lie in the same plane but not horizontal or parallel to the side members 11. I

The device described is of a simple con struction and it will be apparent that the same can be cheaply manufactured to accomplish the desired result. Furthermore, it

will be seen that the device consists of few and simple parts which can be readily cleaned and kept in asanitary condition,

thus particularly adapting my bedstead for use in hospitals, sanitariums and other places where patients are treated.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

'1. In a bedstead, the combination with a frame, of head and foot sections independently mounted to swing on the frame, vertically movablerack members carried by the frameand having connection with the said head and foot sections to normally hold the same rigid relatively to the frame, and means for actuating the said vertically movable rack members to disengage the head and foot sections simultaneously or independently from locked engagement with the frame to permit of swinging and adjusting the head or foot sections relativelyto the frame,

2. In a bedstead, the combination with a frame, of head and foot sections mounted to swing thereon and independently adjustable into various positions on the frame, a vertically movable rack member on the frame, one'of the said rack members being provided for each of the said sections, means connect ing the rack members with the sections, and means operable on the frame and having connection with the said rack members to actuate the same independently or simultaneously and unlock the head section, foot section or both'thehead and foot sections relatively to the frame to 'permitof adjust ing the head and foot sections independently or simultaneously on the frame."

3. In a bedstead, the combination with a frame, of a centrally arranged member carried by the frame and constituting a track, a plurality of similar sections mounted to swing on the frame, slides mounted to operate over the said track, rack members movable in the track and normally engaging the said slides, a connection'between the slides and the said sections for holdingthe sections in locked engagement with the frame when the said rack members engage the said slides, and means for moving the rack members out of engagement with the slides to unlock the said sections relatively tov the said frame and permit of adjusting'the same thereon. i

In a bedstead, the combination with a frame, of a member on the frame and forming a track, a section mounted to swing on the frame, a slide mounted to operate over the track, a rack member movably supported in the track, a pawl carried by the slide and normally engaged'by the rack member, a rod connecting the slide with the section, and means operable on'the frame for mo ing the rack 1 member out of engagement with the pawl of the slide to permit of adjusting the said section relatively to the said frame.

5. In a bedstead, the combination with a frame, of a member on the frame and forming a track, a section mounted to swing orthe frame, a slide mounted to operate over the track, a rack member movably supported in the track, a pawl carried by the slide and normally engaged by the rack memher, a rod connecting the slide with the section, and a pedal mounted to swing on the frame and having connection with the said rack member for moving the same out of engagement with the pawl of the slide to per- 15 EDWARD J.
