DANIEL POTTER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS..A
Letters Patent No. 104,349, elated .func 14, 1870. i l
IMPROVED HAY-BINDER PQLE FOR WAGONS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Tc all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, DANIEL POTTER, of Peoria, iu the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hay- Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, 'reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a view of my invention in perspective.
Figure'Z is an enlarged view of my device with the rear eud of the hay-rack broken o.
Figure 3 is a detail, showing thc wiudlass enlarged.
My invention relates to means for securing loads of ioose hay in position while being transported, and consista in a.' novel arrangement of devices 4intended to serve eciently for the purpose mentioned.
`A of the drawing represents the bed of a wagonbox or hay-rack, asthe case maybe; and
B, a standard or fulcrum attached to the rear crosse.,
bar thereof. r
D represents a binding-pole pivoted to the fulcrum B, as shown, and having a hook, c, aixed to its front end.
.E is a cord or chain attached at one end to the front end of a side rail of the box or rack, while its opposite endis securedto the crank-shaft G, in the manner shown on tig. 2.
G is a shaft arranged in brackets H upon the front end of a bed-plate, and I is a crank by which -said shaft is operated.
N represents a ratchet-wheel attached to one end of shaft G, and S a pawl, operating therewith.
The brackets H are screwed to the bed-plate of the box or rack, by means of the rods or bolts yr, and the nuts and screws thereon. v
To operate my device, I press the binding-pole downward longitudinally upon the top of the load,
and draw the cord or chain over the `hook c; I then` turn the crank P and thereby wind the cord upon the shalt G, until the load is suicieutly hound. When this is'accomplished, the pawl S, working'inthe-teeth of ratchet N, holds the pole in place u`ntilit is-desirable to release it.
I claim as lny inventionl The apparatus herein describedgthr binding loaded hay, eonsistiu g of the standard B, pole D, cord or chain E, shaft G, crank l", ratchets N, and pawl S, when constructed 'and arranged substantially as specilied.
HWlnfcestimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence oiLtwqwitnesscs.
DANIEL POTTER.
