Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE F. NEW'COMB, OF NET HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IM PROVEM ENT IN BAGGAGE-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 104,339, dated June 14, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. NEweoMB, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in Baggage-Check; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specitcation, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front view; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a central section; Fig. 4, the destination-plate; and in Fig. 5, the reverse ot' the same plate.
This invent-ion relates to an improvement in checks such as are used by railroads for the identification of baggage, the object being to combine with the number the name of the station, or destination of the baggage; andthe invention consists in the construction of the check so as to receive and hold a plate upon which several stations are indicated, and so that the check may be adjusted to present either one of the several names or stations indicated thereon.
a is the base-plate of the check, and B the check proper, on which the number is fixed, as seen in Fig. 1.
The said check B and plate a are looped together and secured by a strapA, as seen in Figs. l and 2, and the upper end of the check B is constructed with an eye, C, which passes through a slot in the plate a, and so that the strap A will pass through the eye of the check in the back side of the plate, as seen in Fig. 2,
and formed so as to leave a space between the check and plate to receive the direction-plate D.
The said direction-plate D is constructed as seen in Figs. et and 5, the two figures representin g reverse sides of the same plate, so as to be set between the plate and check, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and with a slot, d, through its center, into which sits a tongue, f, formed on the check or plate, as the case may be, which prevents the removal of the directionplate when the plate is secured by the strap, as seen in Fig.r2.
Upon thesaid plate the names of several stations are indicated, and through the check a slot, b, is formed, as seen in- Figs. l and 3, in such relative position to the plate D that one name only on the plate D will appear through the said slot, as seen in Fig. l.
The plate may be set upon the different names by withdrawing the strap A and lifting the check B, so as to release the plate, and then when the plate is readjusted the plate is again secured, as before. Thus, when the baggage is checked, the check itself indicates the destination of the baggage, so that wherever the baggage may be its proper destination is known by examination of the check.
I claim as 'my invention- In combination with the plate a, check B,
and strap A, the direction-plate D, the whole being constructed and arranged so as to oper-` ate substantially as set forth.
