Description

iliventionfy JOHN Monture," Or BOUND BROOK, rNEW JERSEY.
`,Letters Patent No. 104,622, dated `Tune 21, A1870.
turnover) METHoD or' 'zfAsTnNING LEADS.
`'.lfhe Schedule` referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same. v
Toul!` whom, it 'may concern.' g
Beit known that, JOHN Menu-LTT, of .Bound Brook, in the conn-ty vvof Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement ,in Fastenings for Halter-Leads, of which the following :is a full, clear-aud exact description. A
My invention consists in the peculiar construction l ofa tongue attached `to the end of the strap of the llalterflead, iu combination with a vpeculiariy-formed `slide surrounding'thestralnwhereby great security and facility `of `attachment to and detachment from a l ring, tree, post, or other fixture to wh'ic'h it ruayfhe desirable tohiteh a horse, are ohtaneds In the accompanying'drawing which illustrates my Figures 1 and 2 are views, taken at right angles to each otherot'-a portion ofthe halter-lead`,vto which lny fastening is` applied.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the slide with the tongue inserted therein; l
Figure `4 is a face view ofthe tongue; and
Figure 5 is an eutl view of the slide.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts `in the several igurcs.
A is the strap oftl'lehalter-lead, to one cud of whichis permanently attached the metal tongue G,
which is formed with abroad, flattened, pointed, and shoulderedeinl, somewhat similar to aspenr-headl Bis the slide surrounding and working ou the strap,
` and` having projecting from one side, ou the end which is presented towardthe tongue, an eye, b, the trans- `verse sectional form of the interior of 'whielnshown in fig. 5, issuch that it will permit the spear-head-like port-ion of the tongue A. to pass through it when the latter is turned, up edgewise relatively to the slide,
but not when parallel therewith.
This eye is eountersunk in the back, as shown at c c inig. 5, to receive the shoulders e e of the tongue. This 'slide has plaeed'withiu and secured to ita spring, d, which presses upon one side of the strap and prevents the -slide from .slipping too easily upon thest-rap Tofasten the halter-lead to a ring or other fixture,
' the end of the strap to which the tongue is attached is passed through or around such fixture, and placed with its broadeud edgewise relatively to the vslide B, and in that position passed through the eyeb thereof, until its shoulders e e protrude through the said eye, when `it is turned one quarter round to bring it parallel with the slide, audtheudrawn back to bring its 7shoulders e e into the countersiuk c c, by which `meansl the tongue is locked.
The loop formed by the portion of thc strap between "the slide and the tongue may b hawn up tight around the post or bitching-fixture byi oving the slide along the strap, and while it is Vtight the tongue cannot get y unlocked.l
To unhitch the strap the slide mustfirst be moved back far enough to siaeken the loop of the strap, and the tongue is then pushed forward far enough to re lease its shoulders e e from the countersink c c, and, on being turned up edgewise, it may be withdrawn .through the eye of the slide. What I claim as luy inventi on, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the tongue 0,-constructed with a broad-shouldered end, and the slide B, provided with an eye, i), arranged substantially as described, for the reception of said tongue. Witnesses:
