To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN E. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lane, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoof-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in hoof clippers; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I now consider to be my preferred embodiment from among other formations and arrangements within the spirit and scope of my invention.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and arrangements as more fully and particularly set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:Figure 1, is a side elevation showing the device in opened position. Fig. 2, is a front elevation with the parts in the same positions as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a side elevation showing the parts in closed or cutting position. Fig. 4, is a cross section on the line 4- 1, Fig. 1.
In the specific example illustrated I show an upright rigid frame or standard consisting of a pair of spaced parallel bars 1, 1, extended laterally and oppositely at their upper ends and looped or otherwise formed, to provide handles 10. The lower ends of the bars are spaced by and rigidly secured to a foot or base block 2, at its lower end having a forwardly projecting and downwardly inclined flange forming the fixed jaw, platen or anvil 20, of the clipper. This fixed jaw is usually transversely grooved or corrugated at 21, on its upper face. This base or foot block is also formed or provided, at its upper end, with a rearwardly projecting foot rest 22. The lower end or base surface 23, of the foot block is preferably inclined downwardly and forwardly from its rear edge to the front edge of the jaw 20, to provide a rocking base "for the purpose hereinafter explained.
Above the foot block 2, I provide sliding head 3, vertically arranged and confined between the bars 1, to reciprocate vertically between the upper end of the foot block .2, and spacing block 4, secured to and between Specification of Letters Patent.

the bars 1, and limiting the upward move ment of said head. This head is preferably confined between, to reciprocate longitudinally of the bars 1, by parallel edge flanges 80, overlapping the front and rear longitudinal edges of the bars 1. At its lower end, the head is formed with an elongated forwardly and downwardly curved fiange or jaw 31, arranged over the fixed jaw 20, and at its lower vertically-disposed free end formed or provided with any suitable transversely arranged cutting edge designed to perform the desired cutting or clipping operation on the animals hoof. If so desired, the vertically disposed or depending end of said jaw 31, can be formed at its front face with a blade receiving recess and seat 32, to receive cutting blade or knife 33. This blade 33, can be riveted or' otherwise secured to the jaw to provide the jaw with the desired depending transverse cutting edge. Where a separate blade is employed, removal of worn or broken blades and substitution of new or repaired blades, is possible, although I do not wish to so limit my invention.
The head is reciprocated through the medium of a link 5, at its lower end pivotally joined to an ear 3&, projecting rearwardly from the upper end of the head, and at its upper end forked and straddling and pivotally joined to a vertically swingable hand lever 6, at its front end fulcrumed 011 a transverse bolt 60, passed through the upper ends of the bars 1, with the fulcrumed end of the lever arranged between said bars.
In using the clipper of my invention, the fixed jaw 20, (with parts in the positions shown by Fig. 1) is slipped under the hoof to be clipped, while the hoof rests on the ground or floor, and the upper end of the standard is then drawn rear-wardly to tilt or rock the standard on the inclined base of the foot block and thereby elevate the fixed jaw and the hoof into a desirable position for clipping. The corrugated surface of said fixed aw is designed to hold the hoof and prevent slipping thereof on or from said jaw. While the hoof is thus held by the elevated or tilted fixed jaw 20, in position for clipping the sliding head is forced down by depressing the hand lever, until the cutting blade thereof has performed the clipping operation and the head has been stopped by engagement with the upper end of the foot block. The head is then elevated by raising the hand lever and the device can then be moved to a ditl'erent portion of the hoof needing trimming and the operation repeated until the hoof has been trimmed to the desired extent. The fixed jaw can be readily slipped under the hoot when the standard is held vertically even though the hoof -is resting on the floor, and the operation of slipping said jaw under the hoof can be aided by the foot of the operator on the foot rest 22, and pressing forwardly. The said jaw can be held in the desired position under the 11001 by the operators foot on said rest.
By the use of the device of this invention, it is not necessary to take hold of the animals leg to raise his hoof to an elevated position to permit trimming. The hoots can be trimmed while on the fioor and without annoying the animal by raising his hoofs to an elevated position and a serious diiiiculty heretofore encountered in trimming hoo-is is hence avoided.
The device is readily understood and easily operated, and hoois can be readily thereby trimmed without the assistance of a skilled or expert blacksmith or other operator.
It is evident that various changes, modifications and variations might be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact disclosure hereof.
What I claim is 1. A hoof clipper comprising a vertically disposed standard having an upwardly and rearwardly inclined lower base end, said standard having a rear foot rest at its lower end and a forwardly projecting fixed jaw, and a vertically movable head having oper- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ating means and provided with a cutting edge above said jaw.
2. A hoof clipper comprising a standard having a foot block rigid with its lower end and forming the base thereof, said block having a fixed jaw projecting forwardly from its lower end and a foot rest projecting rearwardly from its upper portion, and a vertically movable head provided with a clipping edge and operating means.
3. A hoot clipper comprising a standard having an end base at one side formed with an elevated foot piece and at the opposite side formed with a depressed laterally projecting fiat jaw, a reciprocating head slidable longitudinally of the standard toward and from said base and provided with a transversely arranged cutting edge spaced laterally from the standard and arranged opposite said jaw, and operating means for said head.

A hoot clipper comprisingan elongated standard consisting of parallel longitudinal bars, a base at one end of the standard and fixed between the bars and having alaterally projecting d-epressed jaw, a head fitted and slidable between said bars and limited in one direction by engagement with said base, a stop between the bars limiting move ment of the head in the opposite direction, and means carried by the bars for reciprocating said head, said. head having a lateral projection from one end turned toward said jaw and provided with a transverse cutting edge.
