SHAVING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1912.
Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,128.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J HN REIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of -Hillsboro and State of Florida have invented new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Brushes, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to brushes and particularly to shaving brushes, the object of the invention being .to provide a brush which will be so constructed that a paste like soap can be quickly and conveniently fed to the bristles of the brush.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a brush with a magazine which is designed to contain one or a plurality of sticks of soap whereby the supply in the feed passage of the brush can be replenished as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brush in which the cap of the handle or magazine will form a manipulating member whereby-the operation of placing the soapstick in the brush by aid of the feeding means will be greatly facilitated.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar-parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a vertical section through the brush showing the actuating rod of the plunger in its inoperative position in full lines and'in its operative position .in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig; 3 is a plunger and the actuating rod therefor. 7
The handle 1 has secured thereto at one handle is provided with-a magazine chamber in which is mounted a defining member 3 which is so constructed that the portions 4 of the member are radially disposed and spaced relatively so as to form therebetween the intervening elongated compartments 5 whose open sides are closed by the walls 6 of thehandle. At the outer end. the walls 6 are threaded as at7 to receive the correspondingly threaded flange 8 of the cap 9.
The magazine like portion is provided,
' the handle 1. The bore 12 is substantially cd-extensive with each compartment 5. The
"compartments are designed to contain sticks of paste like soap 13 as shown particularly in Fig; 2 and when desired one of these stlcks may be removed and inserted in the passage 12 for use. The passage 12 opens into the restricted nozzle 14, the latter being.
extended into the bristles 2 of the brush as .shown in Fig. 1. A valve plate 15 is slidably mounted in the handle 1 and it is 17 on the handle 1 has a portion yieldingly' engaged against thevalve plate 15 so as to normally hold the latter in a closed or cutoff position.
To eflect the discharge of soap to the bristles 2 of the brush I provide a plunger or -follower 18. This follower is provided with a tubular port-ion 19 which is interiorly threaded as at 20 so as to receive the correspondingly threaded screw 21. This screw is rotatably mounted' as at 22 upon the central portion of the cap 9, the said screw being provided with spaced hollows 23 which are disposed upon theopposite sides of the cap 9 so as to hold the screw against longitudinal movement. The outer end of the screw is provided with a knurled head 23 which may be manually operated so that the plunger can be brought to bear against the soap.
Now that the details of construct-ion of the brushv are fully described it is said :that when it is desired to convey a quantity of soap to the bristles 2 the valve 15 is manipulated so as to cause the opening 16 therein to. register with the. nozzle 14. The screw 21 is then rotated so that the plunger 18 is applied against'the soap with sufiicientpressure to cause the latter to be conducted by way of the nozzle 14 to the bristles.
It is stated that the feeding means of the follower and the cap 9 are relatively disposed and connected together so that on the initial insertion of a stick of soap in the passage-12 the cap 9 can be conveniently held in the-hand and manipulated and the followerinserted in the passage 12 behind the soap so as to force. the latter to its operative feeding position.
I claim Ashavingbrush, comprising a handle having a longitudinally extending passage and provided with, a tube disposed in line in one direction the follower will be fed toward the nozzle, a valve slidably mounted in the handle and disposed between one end of the passage, and an adjacent portion of the nozzle and provided with a passage 15 adapted to aline with the nozzle, and means for normally holding the valve in a cut-off position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, JOHN E. REIS. Witnesses:
Gr. H. CORNELIUS, L. P. BROADFIELD.
