JOHN H. MOCONNELL, OF WINSLOW, INDIANA. 1
MUSTACHE-GUARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOHN H. MoCoNNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winslow, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache-Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in h mustache guards.
One object of the invention is to provide a guard of this character which may be readily applied to andremoved from the mustache and which when applied will effectually cover and protect the mustache while eating or drinking so that the food or liquid Wlll not come in contact with the same.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, eflicient in operation and which when not in use may be folded and readily carried in the pocket.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certainnovel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement ofparts as willbe more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention; Fig. '2 is 'a perspective view of the guard with the parts in an open position; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts in closed position; Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the guard with the parts as shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a similar view with the parts as shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the hinged connecting bar and spring for connecting the sections of the inner members together and for holding the outer members in operative and inoperative positions. Y
My improved mustache guard-comprises inner mustache engaging members 1 which are in. the form of combs and which are adapted to be placed against the lip, and the teet mustache. The members 1 are adjustably and hingedly connected together at their inner end by a narrow connecting bar or plate 2 formed in hingedly connected sections in which are formed longitudinally disposed slots 3 with which are engaged headed studs Specification 01' Letters Patent. Application flled January 25, 1912. "Serial No. 673,429.
, into operative position.
thereof pushed upwardly through the Patented Oct. 29,1912.
4 secured to and projecting from the outer side of the members 1 and through the slots 3 as shown. On the outer ends of the mem bers 1 are formed longitudinally extending dles whereby the members 1 are engaged with and disengaged from the mustache. The hinged connection of the members 1 will permit the same to conform to the curvature or shape of thelip and when the guard is not in use will permit the same to be folded together end to end and readily carried in pocket.
Hmgedly connected to'the lower edge of the members 1 and adapted to co-act therewith to hold the guard in position are clamping members 6, said members also being preferably in theform of combs. The teeth 7 of the combs or members 6 are of slightly less length than the teeth of the members 1 and said teeth 7 are disposed opposite to the spaces between the teeth of the members 1 and are curved or concaved to fit around the hairs of the mustache when gathered or bunched together by the members 1. The outer ends of the teeth 7 of the members 6 andthe teeth of the members 1 are bent outwardly to a slight-extent to pre vent said ends from comin into engagement with the lipwhen the mem ers 8 arebrought The slotted bars of plates 2 of the guard similar devices whereby when said mem bers are swung down or inwardly, the same will be held in yielding engagement with the outer side of the mustache, thus clamping the latter between said members and the inner members 1. The springs 8 also serve to hold the members 6 in an upright position at right angles to the members 1, while the guardis being engaged with the mustache. The springs 8 are preferably formed integral with the sections of the connecting bar 2 as shown. On the outerends of the members 6 are formed longitudinally extending outwardly curved lugs 9 which provide handles whereby the members 6 may be opened or closed.
The parts of the hinge connection of the clamping members 6 have formed therein short, spirally disposed slots 6* with which are engaged pins 6 on the pintles or pivot rods 6 which are fixed to 'the'hinge connection of the members 1 whereby when said outwardly curved lugs 5-which provide hanare provided with suit-able springs 8- or clamping members 6 are closed or swung up into engagement with the comb members said clamping members 6 will slide outwardly to a slight extent, which action of the clamping members will tend to smooth or straighten out the hairs of the mustache. In applying the guard the teethof the inner members I are placed against the upper lip and said members ushed upwardly thus engaging the teeth w1th the mustache. After the members 1 have thus been engaged with the mustache and the hairs thereof pushed upwardly or bunched together said members are gently pulled laterally or outwardly to a slight extent to draw the hairs down after which, the clamping members 6 are swung up into engagement with the outer sideof the mustache, thus clamping the latter between the members 1 and the members 6 whereby the hairs of the mustache are held up in an out of the way position while eating or drinking.
In order to remove the guard the lugs 5 of the outer ends of the members 1 are grasped between the thumb and finger of each hand and the thumbs forced between the lugs 5 and the lugs 9 of the clamping members 6, thus lifting said members to a slight extent whereupon a gentle downward pull on the guard will disengage the teeth of the members 1 from the mustache. When not in use the clamping members 6 are swung up into engagement with the inner mem bersl whereupon the guard may be readily folded and carried in the pocket or inserted in a suitable case similar to a spectacle case.
From the ,joregoing description taken in connectlon w1th the accompanying drawings,
' the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
'Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i In a mustache guard, a pair of comb like mustache engaging members, a pair of comb like clamping members hingedly connected to sai mustache engaging members and adapted to be swung up into engagement with the mustache whereby the latter is clamped between said members and the inner mustache engaging members, said clamping members being adapted to move outwardly while being swun up into operative position thereby smoot ing the hairs of the mustache, and springs secured to said mustache engaging members and adapted to engage the clamping members whereby the latter are yieldlngly held in operative *or inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit-
