RELEASABLE-FLUKE ANCHOR.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CHAMPLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Releasable- Fluke Anchors, of which the following is a specification.

The general object of this invention is the provision of a folding anchor, the flukes of which are pivotally mounted in the head of the shank whereby the same may be readily folded longitudinally of said shank when the anchor is not in use, means being provided for releasably retaining the fiukes in their extended or operative position.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be unclerstood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein 2- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the anchor in its folded position. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a view looking at the opposite side from Fig. 1 with a removable plate forming a part of the head detached, the flukes being shown in extended position. Fig. 4 is a vertical sect-ion on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

seen that the invention comprises an elongated shank 5, the upper end of which is provided with an aperture 6 for the reception of a ring 7 to which one end of an anchor chain 8 is attached. The other or lower end of the shank 5 is provided with an enlarged fiat head 9, the inner surface of said head being formed with a pair of oppo sitely disposed lugs 10 which are contiguous to the shank 5 and arranged on either side of an elongated longitudinally extending slot 11 formed in said head. The outer extremity of the head is also provided upon its inner surface with a projecting lug 12 which is substantially in alinement with the slot 11 of said head.

Transversely mounted in suitable openings formed in the head 9 and plate 14 are the oppositely disposed pivot pins 16 which are detachably secured in position by means of suitable fasteners such as cotter pins 17. Rotatably mounted upon the pivot pins 16 Specification of Letters Patent.

are the flukes 18 which are provided with the flat inner ends 19 for a purpose which will be presently described.

The outer surface of the head 9 is provided with an elongated arcuate housing 20 which is in alinement with the slot 11 of said head and slidably mounted in said housing is an operating rod 21 having its outer end provided with an eye 22 to which is suitably connected a rope or cable 23 for sliding the rod in its housing. The rod 21 is bent laterally and longitudinally as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing and to the free inner end of said rod is attached a locking block 24 in any suitable manner. The block 24 is provided at its free end with the oppositely disposed laterally projecting wings 25 which are adapted to engage the slots 11 and 15 in the head 9 and the plate 14 respectively whereby the locking block will be guided in itsmovement. When the block 24 is in its upper posit-ion between the lugs 10 it will be seen that the same will not engage the fiukes 18 and thus permit free rotation of the latter so that the same may be swung longitudinally ofthe shank 5 When the anchor is not in use. Upon pushing downwardly upon the rod 21, the locking block 24 will be forced to the other limit of its movement and by previously swinging the flukes to their open or operative position it will be seen that the said block will engage the inner fiat ends 19 of said flukes and thus. prevent rotation of the latter. The anchor may then be thrown overboard and should the flukes become engaged with rocks or other obstructions so that the anchor cannot be hoisted by the chain 8, the rope or cable 23 may then be pulled and release the locking block 24 from engagement with the flukes. This will permit of the free swinging movement of the said fiukes and thus readily facilitate the hoisting of the anchor.

The shank 5 is provided adjacent its upper end with a transverse aperture 26 which is adapted to receive the stock 27 which is provided medially of its ends with a collar 28 which engages one side of the shank 5 when the stock is in position. Said stock is retained in position by means of a pin fastener which is detachably mounted in an opening and engages the other side of the shank in the opening 29. One end of the stock is provided with a lateral extension 30 having a head 31 which prevents the said stock from becoming detached from the shank when the anchor is in its folded position.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a folding anchor which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum and which is durable and eifective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.

What is claimed is 1."A folding anchor comprising a shank having an enlarged head at one end thereof, the inner surface of said head being provided with a plurality of lugs, a plate detachably secured to said lugs, said head and plate being provided with alined elongated slots, flukes pivotally mounted between said head and plate on opposite sides of said slots, and a locking block slidably mounted in said slots and adapted to engage said flukes for retaining the same in extended position.

A folding anchor comprising a shank having an enlarged head at one end thereof, the inner surface of said head being provided with a plurality of lugs, a plate detachably secured to said lugs, said head and plate being provided with alined elongated slots, flukes pivotally mounted between said head and plate on opposite sides of said slots, a locking block slidably mounted in said slots. and adapted to engage said flukes for retaining the same in extended position, and laterally extending wings carried by said block and adapted to engage said slots for guiding said block.

A folding anchor comprising a shank having an enlarged head at one end thereof, the inner surface of said head being provided with a plurality of lugs, a plate detachably secured to said lugs, said head and plate being provided with alined elongated slots, flukes pivotally mounted between said head and plate on opposite sides of said slots, a locking block slidably mounted in said slots and adapted to engage said flukes for retaining the same in extended position, laterally extending wings carried by said block and adapted to engage said slots for guiding said block, and an operating rod connected to said block for sliding the latter back and forth.

4:. A folding anchor comprising a shank having an enlarged head at one end thereof, the inner surface of said head being provided with a plurality of lugs, a plate detachably secured to said lugs, said head and plate being provided with alined elongated slots, flukes pivotally mounted between said head and plate 011 opposite sides of said slots, a locking block slidably mounted in said slots and adapted to engage said flukes for retaining the same in extended position, laterally extending wings carried by said block and adapted to engage said slots for guiding said block, an operating rod connected to said block for sliding the latter back and forth, and a housing for said rod secured to the outer surface of said head in alinement with the slot therein.
