Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application filed June 17, 1916. Serial No. 104,277.
useful improvements in combination pocket articles.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pocket article in the nature of a combination implement adapted for eating purposes, the same being readily carried by the user and easily arranged for operation.
A further object of the device is the pro-' vision of a foldable pocket knife having fork, spoon and bottle opening attachments, provision being made for releasably locking the movable parts in either their operative or inoperative positions.
A still further object is to provide a locking means for different forms of swinging blades of a pocket article whereby the device may be employed for use without any liability'of accident by reason of the closing of the members, the latter also being locked in their closed positions when the device is inoperatively arranged incapable of being opened until manually released.
With'these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same conslsts 1n the novel construction, combination.
and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present article in its open position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through an end portion. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 taken upon a plane at right angles to the plane of section of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is an elevational view of an end portion of the article closed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the locking latches employed w1th the device. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the releasing plates, and, F ig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the releasing pins em loyed with the 'said plates.
he present pocket article is arranged in the form of a folding knife having the usual form of handle 10 and arranged with a knife blade 11 hinged thereto at one end while a spoon 12 is hingedly connected to the same end of the handle, a fork 13 and bottle opener 14 being hinged in a similar manner to the opposite end of the handle.
Each of the folding members is provided with a locking means for retaining the member in either its closed or open position, such means broadly consisting of an angular resilient latch 15 arranged within a socket 16 on the inner face of the handle covering or side plates 17, the latch 15 having a perpendicular laterally projecting bolt 18 adapted for reception within a keeper opening 19 of the movable member such as the fork 13 illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing when the member is closed. The latch bolt 18 is adapted for seating within a similar keeper opening 20 in the base end '21 ofthe member when the latter is open, the keeper sockets 19 and 20 being arranged at diametrically opposite sides of the pivot pin 22 of the blade, which pin is serviceable for the two adja'cently arranged hinged members and secures the side members 17 of the handle together.
thereof having an inclined slot 24 adapted for the reception of a reduced end portion 25-of a releasing pin 26. The said in 26 freely project through a slot 27 m the handle member 17 extending within the recess16 in a position adjacent the latch member 15, a spring 28 being connected between an eye 29 carried by the pin 26 and a post 30 arranged within the recess 16 whereby the pin 26 is normally maintained in a. position not affecting the latch 15. head 31 is mounted upon the pin end 25 outwardly of the plate 23, whereby the pin 26 may be moved obliquely in an outward or lateral direction within the slot 2-ibringing the pin 26 in bearing engagement against the latch 15 flexing the latter to the position illustrated by dotted lilies in Fig. 3 of the drawing and releasing the bolt 18' from which keeper opening the said bolt may be engaged.
' t is designed to provide each of the fold.- ing members of the article with similar retaining latches whereby the members are retained closed or open against any accidental hinging movements until the pin 26 of such A. knurled member is manually either its open ing operated. en the blade 11 is open it will be apparent is desirable to maintain the same in cutting that it such position against accidental closing while thesame is equally true with respect to the spoon 12 and fork 13 employable for eating purposes. The bottle opener 14 has an outer and an inner hook 32 and 33 respectively, it being quite essential for the employment of the inner hook '33 in releasa crown or crimped closure from a bottle that the member 14 be rigidly maintained in longitudinal alinement with the handle 10, the present locking latch being in this instance essential for the operation of the device.
What I claim as new is 2- v 1. A knife comprising a handle, a blade member hinged to the end thereof and having a keeper openings in the base portion thereof, the said handle having one of its sides provided with a recess adjacent the said base portion, a flexible locking latch within the said recess, a projecting bolt upon the said latch adapted for seating'within the said keeper openings when the blade is in or closed position, a releasing plate carried by the said handle having an oblique slot therein, a releasing pin for the said latch arranged within the said recess slidably extending through the said slot,
ranged with .outer ends of the said teeters a knurled operating head upon the outer end of the said pin flatly arranged slidably upon the said plate, and normal positioning means for the said pin.
. 2. A pocket article comprising a handle having side members provided with in wardly opening recesses adjacent the op posite ends of the handle, implements pivoted to the said handle having base portions arranged adjacent the open sides of the said recesses and provided with keeper openings communicating therewith, flexible locking latches within thesaid recesses, bolts upon the said latches adapted for seating within the said keeper openings when the implements are arranged in their opened and closed positions, releasing plates carried by the said side members, the: said releasing plates and side members having alining slots therein communicating with the said recesses, the said slots being obliquely arrespect to the handle, releasing pins for the said latches arranged within the said recesses projecting through the said slots, knurled operating heads upon the tioned upon the said re easing plates, and normally positioning retracting means for the said pins.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
