THOMAS J. OOULSTON, OF ROYERS FOR-D, ASSIGNOR TO ENOS S. SHANTZ AND OLIVER B. KEELY, OF SPRINGVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 104,273, dated June 14, 1870.
COMBINED STOVE-LID AND COVER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Nature and Object of the Invention.
Hitherto the lid and cover of the mouth of the fuel-holder of a magazine-stove have been fitted and applied in two distinct or separate parts, and, consequently, requiring a removal and a readjustment of cachpart separately every time the fuel-holder is. re-
quired to bercplenished; besides, the said parts, not being connected to the top plate of the stove, required that they be separately or successively laid upon the floor or carpet, or upon a chair, or some other inappropriate place, at the risk of scorching the same while the fuel was being filled into the magazine.
The object of my invention is to do away with these objectionable characteristics of the separate lid and cover; and
My invention consists- First, in combining the two together in one piece; and
Second, in supporting the same, as combined together, on the top plate of the stove, when the mouth of the magazine is opened, by means of a hooked tumpin or stud thereon, which projects down through an appropriate hole in the top plate.
Referring to the drawings-,-
A is the lid, and B, the cover, each of which is cast so that the beveled-edge a of the lid A will fit accurately around against the inside of the lower edge or rim of B, with the bottom surfaces of each in the same plane, and with a hole in the center of each, for the admission of a screw-bolt, O.
The stem of the screw-bolt G is first passed through a knob-handle, c, and the said knob-handle, together with the cover B and lid A, is firmly combined together by means of a nut, c", screwed up against the under side-0f M, as represented in the drawings.
The dotted lines o 1: represent the flanged upper end of the usual magazine, resting, in the usual mannor, in the top plate (represented by the dotted lines to w) of the stove.
At one edge of the cover B, there is cast a horizontal projection, which has a cylindrical stud, 1), projecting downward from its under side.
This stud passes down through an appropriate hole.
in the top plate 10, when the combined cor'er and lid described is applied thereon, and by means of a projecting hook, I), which catches under the plate o in a well-known manner, and supports the said combined a lid and cover when the same is turned horizontally around off the mouth of the magazine '1: 'v.
- It will, therefore, be understood, without further explanation that the said combined lid and cover can readily be turned aroundofl the mouth of the magazine at one operation, and that it will be supported in that position, by means of the hooked stud 1)", until replaced in position over the mouth of the magazine by a contrary mot-ion.
Claims.
I claim as my invention- 1.. The combination of the lid A, cover B, and screwbolt 0, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. In combination with the said combined lid, cover, and screw-bolt, the hooked stud I)", substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
'THOS. .T. COULSTON.
