WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patenteaot. 29,1912.
Application led April 30, 1910. Serial No. 558,536.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DULLEs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Englewood, Bergen county, New Jersey, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Window Construction, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawglshis invention which relates to window construction, is of especial advantage in sliding fireproof windows, in that wire glass or other iireproof glass has edges located behind projecting portions of the masonry or other reproof wall so as to be protected thereby and is also of advantage both with reproof and non-fireproof windows in offering less obstruction to the passage of light than the usual window construction and because of its simplicity and cheapness.
In the accompanying drawing showing in a diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of this invention, Figure 1 is an` elevation and Fig. 2 is a horizontal partial section on an enlarged scale.
As indicated in the drawing the side member of the window frame which may be in the form of a weight box, such as 5, may be located in a recess in the fireproof wall 4 of masonry, or other iireproof material. This weight box which may be of metal, concrete, terracotta, earthenware'or other suitable material, preferably iireproof, may be provided with the removable cover plate 11 secured to the box by the screws 17, 18 and preferably formed with a suitable recess 19, 21 in which the center plate 15 is mounted and adjustably secured in position by the screws 16 cooperating with suitable slots in the' plate. The inner plate 2O may be similarly secured in position by the screws 12 engaging suitable slots in the plate so that the inner guide 10 integral with this plate may be adjusted in vposition'with respect to the center guide 25 on the center plate 15 and with respect to the outer guide 9 on the cover plate 11. As indicated this inner guide 10 may be formed of heavy iron or other ireproof material so as to give sufficient lireproof protection on the inner or room side of the window opening either alone or in connection with the metallic casing or molding strip 6, 7 which may have the edge molding 6a formed thereon and extending around the window opening, or in connection with some other part of the window frame such as a projecting portion of the weight box.
The top glass 1 may as indicated be of wire glass and of greater width than the 'window opening so that its lateral and upper edges extend behind the ireproof wall and are protected by the projecting edges thereof. This glass may as indicated be mounted in a suitable binding strip 3 of.
metal or other reproof material preferably closely engaging the same and may be guided between the other guide 9 and the center guide 25, so that the inner edges of the binding strip and guides are substan- ,tially iiush with the edges of the window opening in the wall. The bottom glass 2 may be mounted in a similar binding strip 3 running between the center guide 25 and the inner guide 10 which as indicated protects the recessed edges of the iireproof glass. These upper and lower window glasses may if desired be suitably counterbalanced by the weights 13, 14 in the -usual way.
Where wire glass or other suit-ably reinforced glass or heavy plate glass is used the binding strip may be dispensed with but ordinarily a light metallic strip should be used to prevent chipping of the edges and to give a smooth running surface. This strip, however, may be of any desired weight and strength, but preferably should be of such narrowness that when the window is mounted it does not project into the window opening, thus permitting the light to pass through the entire window opening from Wall to wall.
It is evident that the side members of the frame in which the window sashes or glasses are mounted may be variously constructed and may be made of metal, concrete, earthenware or other ireproof material, and may be variously located in a recess in the wall; it is also evident that various other arrangements of guideway members, weight boxes, and other parts of the window frame may be employed and that the protection to the edges of the glass here shown as afforded by the molding strip 6, 7 may be supplied by other parts of the window frame such as projecting portions of the guide strip'or of the weight box. 1t is also evident that instead of providing a separate Weight box as illustrated the recess in the wall may serve as the Weight box and the guide strips and other members may be suitably attached to or connected with thel walls ot the recess or of such suitable casing or molding strip as may be used to inclose the inner or room side of the recess, 'and that my invention is equally applicable to Windows in connection with which other methods and means of mounting, removing, opening, and closing are em loyed.
Having described this invention in connection with illustrative embodiments, proportions, constructions and materials, to the details of which disclosure the invention is; ynot of course to be limited, what is claimed; asnevv and what is desired to be secured by; Letters Patent is set forth in the appended f claims. f 1. rlhe Window construction comprising .reprooi Weight boxes, a cover plate pro lvided with an outer guide removably secured to each Weight box, a center plate prof vided with a center guide adjustably mountedv on said cover plate and an inner plate; having a ireproof inner guide secured tof -said center plate, a iireproof casing strip@ extending around the Window opening, the inner edges of the projecting portions of .said Weight box, guides and casing beinga substantially fiush. f
