invention relates to metallic window frames and sashes particularly adapted for use in windows having vertlcally slidable sashes.
The objects of my invention are to pr vide a simple, practical, economical and highly desirable window construction; to provide jamb cover pieces adapted to be conveniently connected with and removed from the jambs of the frame; to provide means adapted to eliminate side or lateral movement of the sashes; andto provide means adapted to automatically close the openings between :said jambs and said sashes when said sashes are in closed position.
My invention consists in providing removable jamb cover pieces each having one side adapted to be secured inengagement with the respective jambs without the use of screws, nails, rabbets or the like in, providing a sash rubbing plate adjustably fixed to each of the side rails of the u per and lower sashes and extending outwar 1y there-- from, whereby said plates are adapted to engage the respective jamb cover pieces, there y preventing lateral motion of the sashes; and in providing a closure block fixed to the outer side of each of said jamb cover pieces and adapted to closel seal the upper and lower edges, res ective y, of the lower and upper sashes an positioned opsite the meeting rails when said sashes are lnclosed position.
My invention also consists in the construction, combination, arrangement and location of parts, as herein set forth and claimed.

In the preferred construction of my invention I provide frame 1 comprising vertical side supports or'jambs 2 and 3 having head i and sill 5 suitably fixed thereto. The side 3ambs each have inwardly projecting pendu-' lum strip 6 suitably fixed thereto for the purpose of preventing contact with each other of the usual window weights suspended from chains 7 and 8, res ectlvely, and supported by usual pulley i ported by the respective jambs. As clearly shown in Fig. 5, jamb cover pieces 9 have U-shaped longitudinal edges 10 into whichare received inwardly projecting edges or not shown) rotat-' ably mounted in the usual manner andsupflanges 11 of the respective angular ortions.

When the lower sash is elevated and the upper sash is lowered, meeting rails 22 and 23 have sufiicient play relative to the sash guides to insure freedom of lowering and elevating the sashes, as by eliminating unnecessary friction between the parts, yet when the sashes are in closed position, the closure blocks provide an air tight connection between the sashes and the sash guides. thereby excluding undesirable elements such as wind, rain, snow, dust, etc. from thebuilding.
The closure blocks preferably are con structed of bronze, for the reason that the sashes are usually constructed of steel, and as is well known,the frictional co-eiiicient of steel and bronze is considerably less than the frictional coeflicient of steel .and steel, or other similar contacting metals, whereby the blocks will withstand considerable wear without the necessity of renewal.
For the purpose of preventing side or latv eral play in the upper or lower sashes I provide adjustable bronze sash rubbing plates 28, clearly shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 6. .As
shown in Fig. 6, the rubbing plates have spaced apart slots 29 therein. A rubblng plate is adjustably fixed to the top and bottom of side rails 30 and 31, respectively, of
upper and lower sashes 27 and-26, by screws -32 received through slots 29 in the rubbing plates and threaded at 33 to the vertical side rails, whereby outer ends 34-. of the rubbing plates are ada ted to engage the outer surface of the a jacent jamb cover pieces 9.
When the rubbing plates are properly adjusted, by means-of movement of the rubbing plates relative to screws 32, the side or lateral playof the sashes is reduced to .a minimum,-thereby providing a substantial and well fitted construction of the sashes relative to the jamb cover pieces and part ing strips. .It is especially advantageous to reduce the side or lateral lay of the sashes for the reason that rattling of the sashes is prevented, and also when thesashes are manually elevated or lowered the possibility of the sashes becoming wedged in the frame is considerably reduced. Furthermore, by having slots 29 in the rubbing plates, after a considerable period of continuous use has caused the plates to wear the jamb cover pieces, the plates may be readjusted relative to the amb cover pieces,thereby providingmeans to obtain a tight fit between the sashes and the jamb cover pieces during are received over the the entire life of the sashes and frame.
To install and assemble the invention, the pendulum-strip 6' issecured in position in frame 1. The frame is then placed in the window ogening in "the wall, as shown in Fig. 5 an suitably. secured therein. The chains 7 and 8 having weights on one end ulleys (not shown) and the jamb covers 9 xed in place. Then the upper sash 27 is inserted and two of the chains are attachedthereto. Next, place the parting strips 17 in place and secure with screws 19. Then, attach the lower sash 26 to the remaining chains and insert the sash guides 15 which are held in place by screws parting strips and remove said strips.- Then unhook the chains from the upper sash and remove said sash. Then remove the jamb cover pieces 9 whereby access to' the pulleys and chains is permitted. To disassemble the window reverse the operation. An advantage of having angular portions 12 integral with jambs 2 and 3, respectively, is that it makes a weather proof as well as burglar vproof construction.
It is apparent that I have invented a sim- 'ple, efliclentand practical construction in metallic window frames and sashes whereby desirable and. advantageous results are accomplished for the purposes intended.
While I have chosen to illustrate the form and construction of my invention by the accompanying drawings and explanations of A the same, I desire to emphasize the fact that the form of construction and the explanation, as relates thereto, are not intended to include the various forms-of modification in which my invention may be. lncorporated.
It is understood that my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and vin the details of construction, as
erein claimed, and that changes in the pre-' loo cise embodiment of the-invention, as herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what isclaimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v

In a metallic window construction having a frame and sashes, a jamb comprising a part of said frame and having 0n 1tS outer side an inwardly turned flange positioned intermediate the sides of saidjamb, an angular member on the outer side of said jamb "having an inclined flange, a jamb cover piece having a hooked edge ada ted to engage said inclined flange and a apted to-be in fitted fixed relation with said angular number, an upper and a lower sash having side rails, a parting strip secured to said jamb cover piece, and a block fixed to the outer side of said parting strip. and adapted to close the openings between said jamb [and I said. sashes when said sashes are in closed position. 2.
