i1 H" S WILBER S. SHULER, OF DELTA, OHIO.
APPLE-GOBER.
Application filed August 1, 1911.
To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBER S. SHULER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apple-Corers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fruit corers and more particularly to a device for removing cores from apples.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which is made of a single sheet of resilient material which can be readily stamped by a simple die and which is provided with a pair of jaws having arcuate cutting edges which are adapted to cut out the core of an apple after the same has been cut into several parts.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of the invention being shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein z- Figure l is a view in side elevation with one of the jaws shown in section. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing one of the engaging the core of an apple. Fig. 4: is a plan View of the blank used in constructing the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the device comprises a pair of handles 5 and 6, which are bent at 7 to transmit resiliency thereto and normally maintain the jaws of the corer in an open position. Adjacent the free ends thereof, the handles 5 and 6 are flared outwardly to form the portions 8 and 9, which are considerably wider than said handles,

and which are bent inwardly to provide the jaws l0 and 11 having arcuate cutting edges 12.
The jaw 10 is adapted to fit over the out-- side of the jaw 11 when said aws are in a closed or cutting position, such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The inner surface of the jaw 10 adjacent its cutting edge 12 is beveled at 13 while the outer surface of the jaw 11 is beveled at 14.
In use it will be seen that when it is desired to core an apple, the same is cut into sections and the jaws are adapted to engage the portion desired to be removed and by pressing upon the handles 5 and 6 it is obvious that the jaws will be compressed, thereby removing the core from the apple.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that the invention comprises a device which is simple in construction and which can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
What I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture an apple corer formed from a blank of sheet metal comprising a relatively narrow central portion and enlarged end portions, said blank being bent intermediate its length to form the spaced arms extending substantially par allel, the enlarged ends of the blank being bent apart and having their outer end portions bent toward each other to form the cutting portions, and the cutting portions being bowed outwardly in cross section to permit them to readily cut the core portion from the segment of apple and provided with beveled overlapping cutting edges.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILBER S. SHULER.
