Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, HILMER AGATON GUS- TAFSSON, a subject of the King of Sweden,-

open position, a door, gate, window or other swinging closure, and has in view a catch which will operate automatically to engage the door or other closure when the latter is sufficiently thrown open, and hold the same from closing until purposely released.

To this end the invention in general comprises a catch body having a catch shoulder to engage with the edge of the closure, and hinged to swing to and from the closure, and having a spring bearing thereon outwardly of the hinge connection, and tending to force the shoulder into engaging position.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved catch as applied to a suitable support in a position to engage with a closure, the latter being shown in engaged position; Fig. 2 is a plan of the catch partly in section, in full lines in retracted position under the action of the closure preparatory to the engagement of the latter by the catch shoulder, and in dotted lines in normal position; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan of the catch body, showing a modified form of catch head.

The invention more specifically set forth embodies in its preferred construction a catch body 5 having a catch head 6 provided with an inwardly-arranged catch shoulder 7, the body being hinged at its inner end, as indicated at 8, to permit of the head swinging to and from an engaging position with the closure, the outer side of the body extending a substantial distance away from the hinge and inwardly of the head 6, where it is forced in a direction to carry the shoulder into a position to engage the closure, by a spring 9.

The hinge connection of the catch body is shown to be with an attaching or base-plate 10, which also carries an outwardly-projecting pin 11, on which the spring 9 is arranged, the pin passing through a slot 12 formed longitudinally in this side of the catch body, and having a washer 13 arranged over the slot, on which the spring 9 bears. The guide pin 11 is also provided with a collar or other suitable enlargement 14, arranged at the outer side of the catch body and serving as a stop to limit the inward movement of the catch head. The catch head at the outer side curves from the shoulder 7 outwardly and toward the guide pin 11, so that as the head 6 is struck by the closure 15, as the latter swings open, the catch will be automatically retracted against the action of the spring and under the action of the door, as is evident from Fig. 2, and will be returned to engaging position as the closure clears the catch shoulder. The catch body is preferably constructed of one piece of sheet metal which is bent at an intermediate point to form the catch head, with the ends or arms of the strip of metal respectively hinged to the attaching plate and arranged on the guide pin. In this manner the catch is made relatively light and strong and produced at a rela tively small cost.

The catch is generally applied by fastening the attaching plate to the wall of the house or other structure having the closure, with the catch head arranged to engage the edge of the closure when the latter is thrown open. In event the closure is a gate, a suitable support for the catch, such as a post, may be placed in the ground, or the catch applied to the fence. At the point where the closure 15 bears against the head of the catch, the former is preferably provided with a wear-plate 16.

In that form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the head of the catch is shaped so that the closure is engaged automatically when the latter is opened, but for its disengagement it is necessary to press the outer side of the catch inwardly against the tension of the spring with the foot or hand. The catch can, however, be constructed so as to release the closure when the latter is given a substantial pull, as by forming the head of the catch as shown in Fig. 3, the catch head differing in this modification of the invention from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, only in rounding off the point of the catch head at the shoulder 7.

Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A device of the class described, comprising a support, a catch formed of a piece of sheet metal bent intermediate 0]": its ends to form a curved head having a catch shoulder and two arms, one straight and the other curved, the straight arm extending from the inner end of the shoulder and hinged to the support and the curved arm extending toward the support and provided with a slot in its end, a guide pin carried by the support and projecting through the slot of the arm, and a spring surrounding the pin between the support and arm.

2. A device of the character described, comprising an attaching plate provided adj'acent to one end with a pin having a collar on its outer end, a catch having a catch shoulder and two arms, one of the arms being straight and hinged to the end of the attaching plate opposite that carrying the pin, and the other arm curved and provided in its end with an opening through which the pin of the attaching plate loosely passes, and a spring interposed between the curved arm and the attaching plate.
