v To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL J. RAJALA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Redridge, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Comb-Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in comb cleaning devices and has particular application to devices of this type which are carried by the comb.

In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a comb cleaning device which shall be. yield'ingly mounted upon the comb and normally spaced from the juncture of the teeth with the back of the comb so that in the use of the comb, the

cleaning device may be moved toward the back of the comb and held in such position while the comb is in use, the release of the cleaning device serving to effect the cleaning of the teeth of the comb. Furthermore,

aim to provide a device of this character which may be released from the action of the yieldable members to permit movement of the cleaning device relatively to the teeth of the comb so as to facilitate a thorough cleaning of the latter, the comb being provided with means to limit the movement of the cleaning device to prevent the latter from being accidentally detached from the comb upon the release of the yieldable members.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cleaning device of this class which may be *detachably connected with the comb so that the same may be removed therefrom when desired.

With the above and other objects in view which shall appear as the description progresses, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which I have illustrated what I now consider to be the preferred embodiment of the invention; Figure l is a side elevation of a comb showing my improved cleaning device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cleaning device showing the same removed from the comb, and Fig. 4: is an end View of the comb.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the comb is of any usual or preferred construction, exc 't as hereinafter described, and consists o a back 1 and teeth 2. In

the present instance each side edge of the comb is provided with a metallic member 3 bifurcated at its upper end to embrace the sides of the comb and adapted to be securely fastened thereto through the medium of rivets or other suitable fastening devices 4. The ends of the comb and the side edges of the bifurcated portion of the members 3 are formed with alining grooves or recesses 5, the members 3 at a suitable distance below said recesses or 'grooves'being provided with a shoulder 6.

The comb cleaning device is indicated at A and as shown consists of two spaced parallel elongated strips 7 and 8 interconnected at one side edge through the medium of cross bars 9 spaced from one another and designed to enter the crevices between the teeth 2 of the comb. The proximate ends of the strips 7 and 8 are connected by means of integral pieces 10 to each of which is secured one end of a yieldable element 11, shown in the present instance to be a leaf spring havinga substantially semicircular yielding portion 12 terminating in a laterally projecting lip 13 designed to engage the groove 5 formed in the end of the comb. From this construction it will be seen that in the use of the comb, the strips 7 and 8 of the comb cleaning device are gripped in the fingers of the user to move the device toward the back of the comb and place the same under the tension of the yieldable elements 11 to permit the operation of the comb for the desired purpose. Upon the attachment being released, the yieldable elements will act to move the same away from the back of the comb thereby facilitating the cleaning of the teeth of the latter.

To move the cleaning device the full length of the teeth of the comb in order to thoroughly cleanse the latter, the yieldable elements 11 are'operated to disengage the members 13 from the grooves 5 whereby the cleaning device may be moved the full aoeaavo length of the teeth of the comb, the shoulders 6 forming stops to revent the accidental removal of the cleaning device from the comb and adapted to be engaged by the lips 13 for this purpose. When it is desired to remove the cleaning device entirely from the comb, the yieldable elements may be operated to withdraw the lips 13 from engagement with the shoulders 6, thus permitting the removal of the cleaning device from the comb.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily ap parentto those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which 1 now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
