A requisite of a loch for such a struct-ure is that it shall firmly hold some portion of the bridge, in such a way that the strains of the lcount-erweightl will be taken up, and yet the lock must be of such a construction that it maybe readily withdrawn so as to permit the swinging o the bridge.
My main object therefore is to provide al device in which the strains are taken up by the lock and one which is easily manipulated so as to permit'the bridge to open.
A further object of my invention is to provide locking means of great power for forcing the heel of the counterweight tightly against the bumping block so as to prevent any movement of the bridge while in use.
A further object oi' my invention is to providea simple device for locking a bascule or lift bridge which has few parts and which is therefore not liable to get out of order, these parts being such that they may be easily replaced when worn.

Inl order to give a thorough understanding et' the invention, I have shown certain parts of a bascule bridge and will briefly refer to these parts since they. constitute no part ott my invention except in so far as they cooperate with my locking means.
Referring now tol Fig. 1, A .represents in general a bascule,jbridge having a rocker or -rolling segment-"B which rolls on a track C, on the pier I). At W is `shown a counter-A weight which is provided with an extension cu at its rear'end arranged to engagea bumper Y. In orderfo'r the bridgetoswing, the roadway is divided at R, the portion a" being on the bridge proper and-the portion fr being pn the approach to the bridge. I have indicated diagrammatically the operating pinion at 0, but the means for operating the bridge, as stated before, forms no part of my invention. Projecting rearwardly from the extension fw or' the counterweight W is a heel 'H with which 'my improved locking, member is arranged to coperate. While I have shown one counterweight and one locking member in Fig. 1,' it: will be understood that there are two, one on each side of the roadway, as shown in the modified form in Fig. 4. Referring now to .Figs 2 .and 3, itgwill be seen that attached to the anchor column S is a bracket Tte which is pivotally secured one arm e' of ,the locking member V. The arm r has one-.Zend formed in the manner shown in F ig..6. ft will be seen from this figure that there is va semi-cylindrical bearing lo on one-half of the end andl a cylindrical -bearing fvg on the other half# ri`he abutting end lof the other member or arm om is similarly arranged so that when these members are pivoted together by means of a pin, such as that shown at E in Fig. 2, they will form a toggle joint. rlhe end of the member 'um is provided with a shoulder oa, which is arranged to engage the heel II on the extension w of the counterweight W. Pivotally secured to the pin E by means of links L is a piston rod m of a piston M carried by the cylinder G. It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 2 that the toggle joint has a slight play at its center, a space such as that shown at e being left on one side or the other according as to whether the parts 'u and um are in alinement or not. Springs Il may be provided to normally hold the two members o and' d various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.-
The normal position of the locking device is shown in Fig. 1. In this position, the bridge is open for traiiicand the extension 'w of the counterweight W is firmly held against the bumper or abutment When now it is desired to unlock the bridge so as to permit thefcounterweight W to enter the pit Q between the piers P and p, the air on one side of the piston M, see Fig: 2, may be withdrawn and compressed air [may -be forced in the other side by any suitable means, thereby flexing the toggle'joint in the manner shown in Fig. 2, and causing .the shoulder oa' to leave the heel H so as to-perj mit the bridge to'be moved.
