To all whom it may concern.'
Be itknown that I, JOHN LUxns Hirn, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-luntington, in the county of Cabell and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to clamps and primarily to that type wherein the jaws are closed or opened by'a rotary operating member threaded on the body portion of the clamp.
The present invention is adapted for use on beds to secure the bed clothes thereto or for fastening lap-robes and the like.
Clamps may be constructed in accordance with the present invention of heavier material for use in machine shops, or the like, without departing from the scope of the invention as herein claimed.
For a full understanding of the present invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the present invention applied to a support, the clamp operating member being in section. F ig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, parts thereof being in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the clamping jaws.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts' are referred to by like reference characters.
The present invention, as illustrated in the drawings, is secured to a bedstead 1, to which is securely mounted a fastening member 2, but as stated above, it is not my intention to limit the present invention to any particular use. The body portion of the clamp comprises the member 3 having one terminal thereof bifurcated, as at 4f, and the opposite terminal thereof formed into a snap hook 5 having the spring keeper 6 for quick and easy attachment to the support 1. Adjacent to the snap hook 5, the body 3 is threaded, as at 7, and is adapted to receive the jaw operating member 8. The operating member 8 is illustrated as a hollow tubular member having both ends thereof provided with openings, one opening being threaded to engage the threaded portion 7 of the body 3. member S may be otherwise constructed to obtain the desired result.
The clamping aws 9 are pivotally mounted in the bifurcated terminal of the body 3, by a pin 10, said jaws being extended from their pivotal connection into the body ofthe operating member 8, said extensions being designated by the numeral 11. The jaws 9 are extended laterally, as at 12, whereby the operating member engages said extended portions 12 and affords greater clamping power than if the member 8 were to engage the jaws for closing the same nearer to their pivotal connection.
It will be observed from the foregoing that upon rotating the operating member 8 in one direction, said member will move against the portions 12 of the jaws 9 and thereby elo-se the same. When it is desired to open the clamping jaws 9, a reverse 1'0- tary. movement will be imparted to the operating member S, thus causing the latter to engage the terminals 11, as will be obvious.
The clamping terminals of the jaws 9 may be constructed, as desired, but preferably as illustrated, having one jaw provided with a cup-shaped terminal 13 adapted to receive the convex surface of the terminal 14.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A clamp of the character described, comprising a relatively stationary central shaft having one end slotted and its opposite end externally screw threaded, an attaching device secured to the screw threaded end of the central shaft to connect it with a fixed support, a tubular element of greater diameter than the stationary central shaft, rotatably mounted upon said shaft and having its ends closed by heads which have reduced smooth and screw threaded openings to receive the smooth and screw threaded portions of said stationary central shaft, and clamping arms having corresponding ends bent to form hooks which are pivotally mounted in the slotted end of the stationary central shaft, the lower ends of the hooks being disposed in the tubular element and extending outward to engage the inner surface of one head of the same, the upper portions of the hoo-ks also extending outwardly to be engaged by the outer surface of said head.
2. A clamp of the character described, comprising a shaft having one terminal thereof bifurcated and its opposite terminal screw threaded, an attaching device secured to the screw threaded end of said shaft to connect it with a fixed support, a tubular element of greater diameter than said shaft rotatably mounted upon the shaft and having its ends closed by heads which have reduced openings through which said shaft passes, one of said openings being screw threaded to receive the screw threaded portion of said shaft, and clamping arms having corresponding ends bent to form hooks which are pivotally mounted between the bifurcated ends of said shaft, the lower ends of the hooks being disposed in the tubular element and extending` outward to engage the inner surface of one head of the same, the upper portions of the hooks also extending outwardly to be engaged by the outer surface of said head, the arrangement being such that upon the rotation of said tubular element in one direction relatively to said shaft, said arms will be forced toward each other, while upon the rotation of the tubular element in the opposite direction, said arms will be spread.
