Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 22,1912.
Application filed June 7, 1912. Serial No. 702,357.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mop-Holders, of which the following is a specification An object of the invention is to provide a mop holder for rigidly securing a mop thereto.
The invention embodies, among other features, a frame. or body for rigid connection with an end of a stick, with means for releasably securing a mop to the said frame or body, the mop being easily removable from the frame or body when it is desired to clean the same or supply a new mop.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the devlce, a mop being shown in dotted lines in secured position on the device; Fig. 2 is a s1de elevation; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, the securing member being shown in open position; and Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I employ a stick 10 having a T-shaped frame 11 rigidly secured to one end thereof, the said frame having a grooved surface 12 and provided with openings 13, through which the ends 14 of a securing frame 15 are adapted to slidably extend. The securing frame 15 is substantially U-shaped and formed of a single piece of wire-like material bent at its inner extremity to form an eye 16 with the ends of the securing frame extending through the openings 13 in the frame 11 as mentioned heretofore. A c0ntractile spring 17 has an end thereof connected to the eye 16 and the other end thereof connected to an operating member 18, preferably consisting of a single piece of material bent to conform to the curvature of the stick 10 and provided with tongues 19 projected forwardly therefrom for pivotal connection with the stick 10, the point of attachment of an end of the spring 17 with the operating member being in the rear of the point of pivotal connection of the operating member with the stick 10, as shown. A locking ring 20 is mounted to slide on the stick 1() and is adapted to encircle the free end of the operating member 18 to secure the same in locked and rigid position. The extremity of one end 14: is bent to form a hook 21 adapted to receive the free end of a bar 22 terminating at the other end in an eye 23, passed through an eye 2 1 formed on the other end 1 1 of the securing frame 15.
In the use of my device, the mop is placed upon the T-shaped frame 11 to extend across the grooved surface 12 thereof, after which the bar 22 is swung so that the free end of the bar will pass beneath and into en agement with the hook 21 formed on' one of the ends 14: of the securing frame 15, after which the operating member 18 is swung rearwardly on the stick 10 thus, through the medium of the spring 17, causing the frame 15 to move into securing position, to rigidly secure the mop between the T-shaped frame 11 and the bar 22, the ring 20 being then slid forwardly on the stick to engage the free end of the operating member 18 to lock the operating member in ri id position on the stick, thus rigidly securing the mop in operative position.
When it is desired to replace the mop with a new one, the ring 20 is moved out of engagement with the operating member 18, thus permitting the contractile spring 17 to act and swing the operating member 18 into open position, thus also moving the securing frame 15 forwardly on the frame 11 to space the bar 22 a greater distance from the grooved surface 12 of the frame 11 to permit the easy removal of the mop from between the grooved surface 12 of the frame 11 and the bar 22.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a stick, of a frame secured to an end thereof, a securing frame mounted to slide on the first mentioned frame and consisting of a single piece of wire bent at its medial portion to form an eye and terminating in ends having slidable connection with the first mentioned frame, one of the I operating the same relatively to the first said ends being bent to form a hook, a bar mentioned frame. 10 mounted to swing on the other end of the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature securing frame and having the free end in presence of tWo Witnesses.
thereof for engagement with the hooked JOHN F. COSTELLO.
