Be it known that I, DAVID WALTER WEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Night-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in night latches, that is, latches which may be operated from one side by a knob and from the opposite side by a key. In the usual construction of these latches, a tumbler casing is attached to the inner plate which casing carries tumblers and washers between them, and means are provided for holding the washers against rotation, the tumblers being bitted corresponding to the key adapted to operate the lock and so that only the proper key may operate the lock.

The object of this invention is to dispense with disk-like tumblers and washers; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a latch case of usual construction containing suitable latch mechanism for operating the latch bolt- 3 either through a knob (not shown) on one side of the latch, or through a roll-back 4 within the casing, which rollback is adapted to be turned by a key 5. Connected with the casing around the hub 6 of the roll-back is a tubular ward 7 formed with a series of inwardly projecting teeth 8 adapted to co-act with the bittings 9 of the key. These teeth may be varied in width and project to greater or less extent into the tubular ward, and the bittings of the keys will correspond thereto so that a great range of changes may be secured. The tubular ward 7 will be inclosed by a shell or escutcheon 10 provided at its outer end with the usual key-way 11 in line with the tubular ward, the tubular ward being held in place by the outer end of the escutcheon and by means of lugs 12 at the inner end entering notches 18 in the back-plate 14 on opposite sides of the hub 6 of the roll-back.

I claim A night latch comprising a casing and a back-plate, a roll-back mounted in said plate, a tubular ward surrounding the roll back outside said plate and projecting outward therefrom, said tubular ward formed with inwardly projecting teeth, said tubular ward formed at its lower end with lugs, and the plate formed with recesses to receive them, and an escutcheon set over said tubular ward and connected with said plate, the escutcheon bearing at its outer end on the outer end of the tubular ward, and the outer end of the escutcheon formed with a keyway opening into the tubular ward.
