Description

J.H,BARTH. BEDSTEAD.
No.10,418. I Patent ed Jan.10,1854.
UNITED STAWENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. BARTH, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,418, dated January 10, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BAR'III, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and'operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of the bedstead. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line a; w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casting on post A. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the casting on post B. Fig. 5 a perspective view of same casting inverted. Fig. 6 is a plan of posts A and B, showing their relative position.
Similar letters indicate the same parts.
My invention which has for its object facility of erection and rapidity of removal, combined with an ornamental appearance, consists in the employment of an interior set of posts and rails united with the main posts by notched and slotted casings called bearers and holders, fastened one to the main and the other to the interior posts as will be hereafter described.
In the drawings A is one of the main posts, B an interior post, C the end rail and D the side rail. Upon the inner edge of the post A at the required distance from the floor is screwed the casting a called the bearer, and on the bottom of the posts B are screwed the holders 5, shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The bearers a are formed with the right angled notches 0, by which they are secured to the main posts, and have at the base of the shank (Z the shoulder 6, against which rests the face f of the holder when the castings are in position. At right angles to and at the extremity of the shank (Z, is the catch 2', which presses upon the faces at and a of the holder when the bedstead is erected.
The holder b consists of the plate h through which pass the screws securing the casting to the post B, and the cheeks r, the slot between which serves to contain the shank cl of the bearer a.
The operation of my improvement is as follows :-,The rails C and D are secured to be passed through the opening 25 in the castings should it be deemed necessary, though under ordinary circumstances such assistance will be altogether superfluous.
The advantage of this bedstead consists in the facility with which it can be erected and removed, as well as the superior manner of hanging the curtains which'it admits of. In case of fire or other causes of hasty removal, the main posts are readily detached the short posts B either by screws or perby removing the cornice, and inclining the upper part of the post outward, so that the catch and shank shall slip from the holder.
The interior portion of the bedstead can,
in most cases be removed whole, as the posts B will not in any case exceed three feet in height.
' By the arrangement of this bedstead, the
curtains hang within the posts A, permitting the ornaments upon those posts to be seen, and as a whole presenting a richer and more elegant appearance than any bedstead now In use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The notched cheeks 7* r, in combination with the shank [Z and catch 2' as described, for fastening the post A to the inner frame, by inserting the shank between the cheeks in the manner set forth and giving the post a vertical. position; and also causing the speedy disconnection of the same by the inward inclination of the foot of the post substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing wit- IIGSSQS.
JOHN H. BARTI-I.
