To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, -WILLIAM L. NIEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Olive, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hovers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brooders and has for its primary object to provide an improved breeder of the knock down type which shall be simple and economical in construction, easily assembled and dismantled, and which may be compact-1y bundled for shipment.

One of the main objects of the present invention is to provide an improved device of this character embodying walls which permit a gradual ventilation of the interior without drafts, and a construction permit-- ting said walls to be removed when desired from their supporting framework, for the purpose of washing and renovating them.

Another object is to provide an improved skeleton framework for a brooder of this type, made in sections and adjustable in size to suit the size of the brood.

Another object is to provide an improved means for mounting the flexible cover sheet on said brooder.

Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brooder constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 1 is a section on the line IVIV, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on the line VV, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the skeleton frame sections detached. Fig. 7 is a section on the line VIIVII, Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings and to the embodiment therein in which the skeleton frame is shown in two sections, each of said sections may be constructed of any suitable reticulated material, such as wire fence sections 1 and 2. As shown best in Figs. 4 and 6, said wire fence sections are adapted to be bent into arcs with any suitable curvature, with their ends overlapping, as shown in Fig. 4. The front section which, as shown in Fig. 6, is provided with a runway platform and door 3, preferably of Specification of Letters Patent.

sheet metal having stiffening ribs 4 which provide cleats for the chicks to climb into the brooder. Said platform 3 is hinged to one of the horizontal wires of the fence sections, by having a pair of ears 5 cut from the metal thereof and bent upon said wire. In order to provide means for holding the plat, form 3 in a closed position over the doorway opening through the frame section 1, a pair of wire bolts or catches 6 are slidably mounted upon another of the horizontal wires in such manner as to be movable into and out of position for holding the platform and door 3.

In order to provide lateral walls for the brooder which shall be pervious enough to permit a slight change of air within the brooder, such as will not chill the chicks, I employ a sheet of cloth 7 such as canton flannel, said sheets or strips being releasably secured to the wires of the sections, preferably by means of safety pins or similar fasteners 8, which are passed through the cloth material and around any of the wires, or along the top and bottom wires. The cloth material is preferably passed around said wires and the safety pins passed through a double thickness of material to secure it in position.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 8, 5 and 7, a flexible sheet of material 9, preferably the same as the lateral walls, is cut circular and has its peripheral edge secured to the topmost horizontal wires of the two sections by means of clips 10. The top cover is thus suspended from the top wires of the skeleton sections 1 and 2 and for the purpose of weighting such top wall and maintaining it flat, I preferably employ a length of wire 11 whose overlapping ends are provided with a slip joint to enable the wire hoop to be adjusted in size to suit the diameter of the brooder.

What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a wire fence section for removably mounting the lateral wall constructed of flexible pervious washable material, said section comprising horizontal wires and vertical wires, one of the horizontal wires between adjacent vertical wires being cut away to provide a doorway, a runway platform hinged to the wire at the bottom of said doorway, said platform being adapted to perform the functions of a door when in raised posit-ion, and catches slidably mounted on the cut-away wire on either side of said doorway, said catches being movable into and out of engagement With said platform when in raised position.

In a brooder, the combination With cir cularly bent overlapping sections of 'Wl16 fencing provided With upper and lower horizontal Wires, of a strip of pervious Washable material disposed With its lateral edges over and around said horizontal Wires respectively, clips for releasably clamping the edges of said strip to said Wires, and a cover sheet depending inwardly from said upper Wire.

3. A hover comprising of circularly bent overlapping sections of Wire fencing, a strip of pervious material covering each of said sections, the edges of said strips being tolded around the lateral edges of said sections, a cover sheet of pervious material having its edges overhanging the top Wires of said sections and its central port-ion depending Within said sections, and releasable clips for clamping the cover sheet and strips to the top Wires of the sections, said cover sheet being thus adapted to secure the sections together.
