To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, TIL-Lian L. NIEMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount live, in the count;7 of Macoupin and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broeders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brood coops and has for its primary object to provide an improved construction, combination and arrangementof part-s in devices of this character by means of which said coops may be simply and economically constructed and rendered more serviceable in use.

More specifically one of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved cover construction and to provide improved adjustable means for holding said cover in any desired posit-ion to which it may be adjusted.

Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings eX- emplifying the invention and in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings and to the embodiment shown therein, the brood coop comprises a hover compartment 1 and a scratching pen compartment 2, said compartments being divided by a central partition 3 provided with a door-way 1 which may be of any suitable construction. Surmounting the main body of the coop, is a cover or top which extends throughout the length and breadth of both compartments and is hinged in the rear to said body portion.

In order to provide means for supporting the cover 5 in any desired position to which it may be adjusted, a vertical support 6, preferably in the form of a fiat bar of iron having an odset 7 is provided with a deected portion 8 by means of which said bar is secured to the back wall 9 of the brooder through the agency of screws 10. A metal rod 11 bowed into the fo-rm of a quadrant, has one end threaded and passed through a hole in the upper end of the rod 6, being secured in position by nuts 12. The lower end of said rod 11 is provided with an oifset 13 and a downwardly deflected straight portion 14 which is bent at its bottom end and driven into the front wall 15 of the coop to prevent an upward movement of said rod. In order to provide means for holding the lower end 14 of the rod 11 from an outward movement, a pair of keepers 16 of any suitable construction are passed over the lower end of said rod and secured to the front board 15. Secured to the top or cover 5 by means of screws 17, is a base plate 18 of the releasable clamping device, said base plate being provided with an overhanging portion or lug 19 which is provided with a rectangular recess 2O (see Fig. 5) for receiving the solid head 21 of a clamping bolt 22 which passes through a hole in the lug 19 and is provided on its end with a nut 23. A cam lever or handle 24 is ournaled upon the bolt 22 and is shown in Fig. 3 as provided with a beveled lateral face which abuts along the line 25 with a correspondingly beveled surface formed on a part integral with the lug 19. The rod 11 is passed through an elongated slot 26, said rod being clamped when the cam lever 24 is shoved downwardly to draw the bolt 22 inwardly. Said cam lever 24 is provided with a nose or lug 27 which when the cover is being lifted by means of said handle, rests upon a'shoulder 28 on the base plate 1S.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 7, reticulated screens 29 are arranged over the open face of the coop and a frame 30 covered with cheese cloth or other suitable material for admitting air without drafts, is hinged to the top or cover 5 at 31, being raised or lowered independently of said cover at the desire of the workman. lRemovable catches 32 are mounted on the cover for sustaining the air straining frames 30 in raised position.

What I claim is:

1. ln a device of the character described, the combination with a portable coop body, of a cover hinged thereto, an upright in the rear of said coop, a curved rod rigidly mounted at one end below and secured to said upright above, and means carried by said cover for releasably engaging said rod.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a portable coop body, of a top hinged JLherelo, an upright secured to said Coop, a rod secured at its lower end to a the coop and at its upper end to said upright, and means Carried by said cover for releasably engaging said rod.

3. In a chicken Coop, the combination with a portable Coop body, of a support rigidly 10 secured to J[he rear Wall of Said body to pio ject upwardly, a bar secured at one end to the upper end of said support. and having its other end secured to the front Wall of Said body, and a cover hinged to said rear Wall and provided with means for releasably engaging said bar.
