Description

J; HORTON.
Drop Light Standard.
No. 104.155., Patented June 14. 1870 Mm PHOTO-UTNOGRIFHER. WISHXNGTON. Ii 0 anon swat fiat-wt can.
Letters Patent No, 104,155, dated June 14, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN STANDARD FOR DROP-LIGHTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Hon'rox, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Standard for Drop or Reading-Lights; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvementin the standards or pedestals for drop or readinglights, where the gas is conveyed from the chandelier to the standard by a flexible tube. 1 v
. The invention consists in so aflixiug a swivel to the standard as will enable the standard to be moved from one place to another without twisting the flexible tube attached thereto.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a side view of my standard, and
Figure 2 is a section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding .parts in the drawing.
A represents the standard or pedestal, which may be of any desired size or shape.
Afiixcd to the standard A, at any desirable point, is the collar a, which is so fitted to the standard or pedestal A as will enable it to revolve freely around the pedestal.
To this collar is fixed themetallic connection I), to which is attached the flexible tube 0, (leading the gas from any adjacent chandelier or bracket,) the gas being allowed to flow through the connection b and through an opening in the collar (1., thence around a channel, (1, formed in that part of the standard or pedestal around which the collar (it turns, and into a small hole or opening, e, and thence through the standard to the burner, as in ordinary pedestals.
Now, it will be readily seen that a standard or path estal, constructed as above described, may be readily moved to any part of a table or room without the danger or inconvenience of twisting the flexible tubeffor the collar a, revolving freely, will adapt itself to the position of the flexible tube a, in whatever position the standard or pedestal may be placed.
The connection b maybe provided with a cock, if desired, or the cock may be placed elsewhere on the standard, as convenience or taste will suggest.
- Instead of constructing the standard with a swirel collar, the standard may be so arranged. as to freely turn or revolve about its base.
.Or, a swivel-joint may be applied to the crock, or to that part of the flexible tube that is attached or fitted to the burner or chandelier, when, in a measure, the same result is attained.
Having thus described'my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's-' 1. A gas-standard or pedestal for a drop or readinglight, constructed in such manner, by means of a swivel collar or otherwise, as will prevent the flexible tube attached thereto from twisting, when the position of said standard or pedestal is moved, substantially in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore dcscribed.
2. A gas-standard or pedestal, constructed with the swivel collar a, connection b, and channel d, in combination with a flexible tube, substantially in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
' 3. Attaching to a flexible tube or its connections a swivel collar, substantially as and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
JOHN HORTON.
