Description

- J. G. BROWN. T l SUPP APPLICA FILED B.7. 1912.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
,c JAMES Gr. BROWN, 0F ELKHART, INDIANA.
'rMen-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1912.
Application mea February 7, 1912i serial No. 675,998.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. BRowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Track- Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the inventiom'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in track supports and more particularly to a combined cross tie plate and rail brace.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined cross tie plate and rail brace having means for preventing relative movement of the rail vand brace, and, a further object of my invention is to so construct the cross tie plate that portions thereof ma be bent into engagement with the ange o the rail to hold the same in place.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be hereinafter made clearly apparent in the specification and pointed out in the claim. a
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form which my. irlvention may take.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view showing a cross tie having my improved form of combined tie plate and rail brace secured in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view as seen on line 2--2, Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view as seen on line 3 -3, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 4 is a tie of the usual or any preferred construction, upon the upper surface of which is adapted to be positioned my improved form of tie plate 5. Said plate 5 extends approximately `from end to end of the tie and has near its opposite ends, upwardly and inwardly extending braces 6.
The braces 6 are cut away, as shown at 7 so that one side -of the lower `flange of a rail 8 will be received therein when a rail is placed adjacent said brace sections. The inner vertical surfaces of the braces are vertically serrated, as shown at 9. The upper surface of the brace section 6 is so formed as tol lit snugly against the under surface of one side of the head of a rail when the i same is positioned adjacent said brace. Tongues l() are struck from the plate 5 so as to extend vertically therefrom, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to place, ofthe secure a rail in the same 1s positioned against one brace sections 6 and the inner side Vof the rail is struck so as to cause the serrations 9 to bite into the side of the rail. Tongues l0 are then bent outwardly against the side flange of the rail so as to hold the same securely in place. In order to hold the plate 5 in position upon the tie. and to more securely hold the rail in place, I provide the plate 5 with openings therethrough at points adjacent the position occupied by the lower flange of the rail and spikes 1l are driven therethrough into ,the tie, the heads of said spikes engaging the upper surface of the rail flange.
By providing .a tie-plate 5 -having rail braces at its opposite ends, it will be seen that spreading of the rails will be prevented. It will also be seen that by providing the rail engaging surfaces of the brace with serration's, relative movement of the rail and brace will be prevented.
What I claim as new is: The combination with a tie; of a plate adapted to be secured upon the upper surface thereof, inwardly extending rail braces formed at the opposite ends of said plate, vertically extending serrations formed in the inner surface of said rail braces, and tongues formed from the adjacent portions of said plate adapted to be bent toward saidv Vrail braces to secure a rail therebetween. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to -this specification in the presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
