RING-ANID-BOLT SAFE-LOCK.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WV. Mann, of Hamilton, in the county of Butler, and in the State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ring-and- Bolt Safe-Locks, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in looking mechanisms for large safes and vault-s. My improvements are also applicable to safes of small sizes, however.
The object of my invention is to equip a safe door with a very strong locking mechanism, the heavy parts of which are operable by a hand lever, and which, therefore, does not require that the time and combination locks be increased markedly in size or strength in order to effect the movement of said heavy parts. The locking mechanism which constitutes an embodiment of my invention is, furthermore, very simple in construction, and consequently free from liability to get out of repair.
I have shown one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a safe equipped with a door having my safe lock applied thereto shown partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section of the same taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1 is a safe wall in which a safe door 2 is located. Said safe door 2 is constructed with an annular groove 3 extending around its periphery in order to receive a locking ring 1, made of two semicircular members 5, keyed together by means of dove-tailed keys 6. The semi-circular members 5 are provided with a plurality of locking lugs 7 around their peripheries, which, in the position of the door in which it is adapted to be opened, are adapted to register with recesses 8 of the same size and shape located upon the inner face of the door opening. Between the recesses S in said door opening there are situated a cor responding number of inwardly directed lugs 9. In the rear of the lugs 9 there is an annular groove 9 to receive the locking lugs 7 when they are moved behind the lugs 9. One of the semicircular members 5 is, furthermore, provided with a rack 10, with which a gear 11 is adapted to mesh. The gear 11 is situated in the body of the door 2, and is carried upon and operated by Specification of Letters Patent.

ashaft 12, extending out through the outer face of the door. The outer end of the shaft 12 is provided with a handle 13. A bolt having a main bolting bar 1 1, is situated in the body of the door 2, where it is guided by a pair of inwardly projecting pins 15, projecting through slots 16 in said bolt. The bolt is operated by two combination locks 17, having plunger-s 18 projecting from the same, connected by means of a lever 19 pivoted at 20 to said bolt.
An auxiliary bolting bar 21 is riveted by means of a rivet to the main bolting bar 14:. A slot 23 is also provided in said bar 21, to permit the movement of the same upon one of the pins 15, which extends through both bars 1 1 and 21. The bar 21 has a laterally directed arm 2% provided with a socket 25 to receive the end of a plunger 26, operated by a time lock 27. The plunger 26 has one or more indentations 28 in its outer end, adapted to receive the end of an adjusting screw 29, to permit the adjustment of the plunger 26 with reference to the bolt. A recess 30 is situated in the inner face of the door opening to receive the outer end of the bar ll, and a recess 31 is provided in the inner face of the locking ring 1 to permit the entry of the end of the auxiliary bolting bar 21. The inner face of the door is also provided with a frame 32 to receive a glass plate 33, in the usual manner.
In the operation of the locking mechanism, assuming that the door has been opened, upon closing the door, in order to lock the same, the handle 13 is rotated so as to move the lugs 7 out of alinement with the recesses 8 and into their positions behind the lugs 9, and the combination locks 17 are 0p: erated to permit the outward movement of the plungers 18. l/Vhen, now, the time lock has reached the position in which it locks the door, the bars 1 1 and 21, which are riveted together, are siini'iltaneously projected forward into their respective recesses 30 and 31 in the safe wall and locking ring. In order to unlock the door, when the time lock 27 permits, the combination locks are operated to withdraw the bars let and 21. The locking ring, now being free to move, is rotated by turning the handle 13 so as to bring the lugs 7 into registry with the recesses S, the door can now be swung outwardly to open the safe.
While I have described my invention above in detail, I Wish it to be understood that many changes might be made therein Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a safe, a door, a lock ing ring thereon, means for turning said ring and a bolt for engaging said locking ring.
2. Ina device of the character described, the combination of a safe, a door, a locking ring thereon, means for turning said ring, and a bolt located on the door for engaging said locking ring and engaging the Wall of the safe.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a safe, a door, a locking ring thereon and rotatable relatively thereto, means for turning said ring to cause it to engage the Wall of the safe, means to keep the ring from turning When so engaged and a bolt carried by the door engaging the Wall of the safe.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a safe, a door, a locking ring thereon, a gear mechanism for turning said ring, and a bolt located on the door for engaging said locking ring, and engaging the Wall of the safe. I
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a safe, a door, a locking ring thereon and rotatable relatively thereto, a gear mechanism for turning said ring to cause it to engage the Wall of the safe, means to keep the ring from turning When so engaged and a bolt carried by the door engaging the Wall of the safe.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a Wall, a door therein, a bolting means thereon, a time lock connected thereto to control the same, a plurality of combination locks for also controlling said bolting means and a locking ring on said door, the locking ring and Wall being rela tively rotatable, said bolting means being adapted to engage a recess in said Wall and also in said ring.
7. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a Wall, a door therein, a
bolting means thereon, a time lock connected to control the same, a plurality of combination locks for also controlling said bolting means, said combination locks being connected to said bolting means by a lever common to said combination locks and a locking ring on said door, the locking ring and Wall being relatively rotatable, said bolting means being adapted to engage a recess in said Wall and also in said ring.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a safe, a door, a locking ring thereon, gearing for turning said ring and a bolt for engaging said locking ring.
