To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JonN ,EZYKOWIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blissville, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a door lock.
An object of the invention is to provide a lock wherein the door may be locked by turning the key in either one direction or the other and wherein double locking means is provided.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that the edges of the locking bolts must be brought into alinement with the face of the casing before the door may be unlocked.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the invention.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device, attached to a portion of the door. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the lowermost locking bolt in its operative position and the auxiliary locking pawl in such position as to prevent the unlocking of the said bolt without the actuation thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the upper bolt in its locked position and the pawl in inoperative position. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views :My device comprises a casing 1 which is adapted to be secured to a door and a casing 2 adapted to be secured to the jamb in alinement with the first mentioned casing. A plurality of openings 3 are formed in said casing 1 and a plurality of recesses 4: are formed in the casing 2 which recesses are adapted to aline with the openings in the casing 1.
Extending transversely of the casing 1 is a shaft 5 which comprises an inner and outer cylinders 6 and 7, respectively. Mounted between the ends of this shaft and secured thereto by a transversely extending-pin 8 is a gear wheel 9 which is secured in the said shaft by a pin 10 and which has outwardly pro ectlng tongues 11 extending'into slots in the said gear wheel 9. In order that the gear wheel may not have movement longitudinally of the said shaft 5, I have provided on each side thereof encircling the outermost cylinder 6 a collar 12 Which extends through the side .of the casing 1 and slightly beyond the end of the shaft 5. Secured in the end of the collar 12 so as to reduce the size of the opening in the cylinder (3, but constructed so as to allow the key to be inserted are collars 13 which protect th pin 8 and obscure it from view. I
Mounted within the casing 1 and bridging the gear wheel 9 is a guide 14 and slidably mounted between this guide and the adjacent wall of the said casing are two bolts 15 having rack bars on their lower edges adapted to engage the teeth of the gear 9 so that when the said gear is operated the bolt will be moved either forwardly or backwardly. These bolts 15 are adapted to slide to and fro through the openings 3 in. the casing 1 and into the recesses 4 in the casing 2 so as to maintain the door in its locked position. In order that the bolts 15 may be maintained in proper position above the gear 9, I have secured to one side of each of the said bolts a plate 16 which extends to one side of the said gear 9 and prevents any lateral movement of the plate with relation to the said gear.
It will be obvious that as the gear wheel 9 is moved in one direction one of the bolts 15 will be projected from the corresponding opening in the casing 1 and into the recess 1 in the casing 2 while the other bolts will be retracted within the casing 1 and in inoperative position, however when the wheel is turned in the other direction to its fullest extent the other bolts 15 will be directed into the corresponding recess 3 in the casing 1, while the first mentioned bolts will be retracted within the casing 1. When it is desired to set the bolts 15 in such position as the door may be opened or closed the gear wheel is turned so that the ends of the said bolts will be in alinement with the faces of the casing in which the openings 3 are formed and in which positioneither of the bolts will be projected from the said casing. The door may then be readily opened.
Slidably mounted in the lower end of the casing l is a latch 17 which projects through an opening in the face of the said casing and into a recess in the casing This latch IT is normally pressed so that the ends thereof will extend beyond the face of the casing l by a coil spring 18 which encircles a link 19 pivotally attached to the latch and atlaehed to a disk 20 by means of a screw eye '31. This disk 20 has a rectangular opening 22 therethrough which registers with a similarly shaped opening in the casing l and through which opening a shaft extends, on the ends of which knobs are secured.
In order that the door after having been locked by one of the bolts 15 may be maintained in its locked position, I have providedwithin the casing 1 a pivoted pawl 25 which is adapted to engage rack teeth on the. lowermost bolt 15 and to which is conneeted a link 26 which link is, at its outer end, connected to a sliding rack 27 having an elongated opening 28 through which opening pins 29 extend to limit the movement of the said rack. An opening 30 is formed in one face of the casing 1 immediately below the said rack 27 through which opening a key is adapted to be inserted in such manner that a projection on the said key will engage the teeth' on the rack 27 and move the same either in one direction or the other as desired. \Vhen the key is turned so as to move the rack away from the gear 9, the pawl 25 is moved about its pivot so as to disengage the teeth on the lowermost bolt 15 and thus allow the said bolt to be disengaged from the recess 4 in the casing 2 by means of a key which is inserted through the opening in the collar 13 and which has a slot in its end to engage the pin 8 so that when this key is turned the pin b will also turn and inasmuch as this pin interlocks with the wheel 9 by means of the projection 11 the said gear will be turned and consequently the bolts 15 withdrawn from the recess 3. To maintain the upper bolt in its locked position the operation of the pawl will be the same except that it engages the lowermost bolt 15 and through the gear wheel 9 maintains the upper bolt in its locked position.
From the foregoing description it may be readily seen that I have provided a lock which after having been operated to lock a door will be exceedingly dillieult to unlock without knowing the const ruetion ol the operating parts of the same.
I have so constructed the device that it is provided with two locking bolts, one of which is thrust into locking position when the key is turned in one direction to its fullest extent and the other of which is thrust into its locked position when the key is turned in the other direction to its fullest extent, but both of which are rendered inoperative when the key is turned so as to bring the ends of the bolts into alinement with the face of the casing'in which they are mounted. I have further provided auxiliary locking means which engages one of the locking bolts to maintain the said bolts in their locked position.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention. I wish it to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment for it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the claim.
lVhat is claimed is:
A lock comprising, a rectangular casing having a plurality of openings in one face thereof, a transversely extending shaft revolubly mounted in said easing, a gear wheel secured to said shaft, a plurality of bolts having racks thereon slidably mounted with- -in the casing and engaging the said gear wheel, a frame for guiding said bolts, plates secured to the said bolts and adapted to engage the side of the gear to prevent the bolt from lateral movement, a pawl pivotally mounted within the casing and adapted to engage the rack on one of said bolts, and a rack bar slidably mounted in the said casing and having a link connection with the said pawl.
