Application filed May 17, 1912. Serial No. 697,853.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, EnNns'r N. O. Dam.- QUisr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bending-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bending tools, and is designed to construct a device which will resize and re-shape jar caps.
It has been found that the metal caps which are threaded upon preserving jars often become damaged and bent to such an extent that, when placed in their operative positions, they do not create an air-tight closure for the jar and are consequently defective.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device which will operate upon the caps to thoroughly straighten the same in order that, when placed in their operative positions, they will create air-tight joints and closures for the jars.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bending tool` constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a U-shaped clamp provided with the horizontal clamping arm 11 adapted to rest upon the top of a table or other suitable support, and the lower horizontal arm 12. A clamping screw 13 of any suitable construction, operates through the horizontal arm 12 and is provided at its outer end with a bearing plate 14 swiveled thereto.
The horizontal clamping arm 11 carries a hollow swage 15 which is exterior-ly threaded, as at 16, to conform with the coni tour of a standard size preserving jar cap,
and provided with the peripheral anvil 17 adjacent to its lower edge, said anvil in combination with the horizontal clamping arm 11 creating a channel 18, the utility of which will hereafter be more fully described. The
interior of this swage is provided with an inwardly extending flange 19 which is pierced by the screws 20, said screws operating through the horizontal clamping arm l1.
A ring 21 is mounted forrotation in the channel 18, said channel being of sufficient width to permit of the comparative free rotation thereof. A bearing 22 is provided upon one side of the ring 21, while a vertical flange or finger 23 is formed from said ring diametrically with respect to the bearing 22, said flange or finger being provided with a vertical groove 211 therein. A handle 25 is pivoted to the bearing 22 by means of the arm 26 which spans the bearing 22 by means of the bifurcated portion 27 and is pivoted by the pin 2S piercing the bifurcated portion 27 and the bearing 22. The opposite end of the handle 25 is provided with the dependentarm 29 which is provided with an inwardly extending rib 30 adapted to be received in the channel 24 of the finger or flange 23.
The arm 26 of the handle 25 is provided with an obliquely arranged passage 31 in which is mounted a headed stud shaft 32 retained in its operative position by the set screw 33. This stud shaft projects somewhat beyond the inner surface of the arm 26 and has journaled upon the inner terminal thereof the roller Bet which is obliquely arranged and rests flush against the adjacent surface of the arm 26, said arm being arranged obliquely to the horizontal plane, as illustrated. This roller 34 is adapted to rest in close proximity to the anvil 17, when the rib 30 of the arm 29 of the handle 25 rests in the groove 24.
A number of finger pieces 35 are formed upon the handle 25 to provide a means whereby the handle and consequently the ring may be rotated, when the handle is positioned as illustrated in Fig. 2. This rotation causes the roller or wheel 34 to operate over the surface of the anvil and against the flange of the jar cap 36 illustrated in dotted lines. The handle 25 is raised about its pivotal point, namely, the pin 28, permitting cap 36 to be threaded upon the swage 15, after which the handle is lowered, bringing the roller 311 in Contact of the screws 20, the sWage l5 can be removed when desired and swages of various sizes substituted therefor.
Having described my invention, what l Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A bendingtool comprising a supporting clamp; a swage arranged on said supporting clamp; an anvil carriedr by said swage; a ring' rotatively retained on said swag'e between said clamp and said anvil; a handle pivoted on said ring; and a roller carried b y said handle and coperating` With said anvil, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a svvage; of a horizontal anvil formed therefrom; a ring rotatably retained upon said sWage by said anvil; a handle carried by said ring; and a roller carried by said handle for Coperating` with said anvil.
