B e it known that I, CHARLES A.. CHAN- HELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit of Chicago, county of Cook, and State o Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification. v

My invention relates to im rovements in floor mops, and has for its o ject the production of a device of this character w ich will be ofimproved construction and etlicient in o eration. j

Other o jects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and 1n which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mop embodylng my invention, the handle being detached, Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on line y y of Fig 1, with the handle attached. v

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a mop head or body which is formed of an elongated strip 1 of a suitable flexible material such as a durable fabric, a plurality of strands 2 of a suitable `absorbent material, being arranged transversely of the strip with their respective extremities projecting from the longitud'nal edges of said strip. The respective extremities of the strip are folded back upon the other sides of strands 2 so as to form a wall or covering of fabric at each side of the strands 2, stitching 3 serving to" secure the opposite sides of the strip together and consequently to securely fasten the strands 2 intermediate the same. The strip 1 is then bent or folded longitudinally and the respective longitudinal edges thereof are secured together by stitching 4 to form a coextensive opening 5 within said strip, as clearly shown in the several views.

Cooperating with the mop head is an annular broken reinforcing member 6 which is formed preferably of a piece of wire of such a gage ,as to possess considerable strength and resilience. The reinforcing member 6 is inserted into the opening 5, said member being of a length slightly greater than that of the mop head Sothat the extremities of said member project from the ends of opening 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The mop head is thus formed into a circle, in which formation the same is retained through the reinforcement afforded by the member 6.

Arranged within t'he mop head in registration with the strip 1 is a substantially semi-circular block 7, the curvature ofthe periphery of said block corresponding with that of the inner side of the strip 1 so as to adapt said block to snugly en age against said inner side of said strip, as c early shown in Fig. 1. Secured to and outwardly projecting from the block 7 are diametric ears 8 which project through openings 9 formed in the inner wall of the opening 5 at diametrically opposite points, said openings 9 being preferably reinforced by metallic eyelets 9. The outer extremities of the ears 8 are formed with perforations 8 for engagement with the reinforcing member 6 whlch thus serves to securely fasten one edge of the block 7 in position.

Provided substantially centrally upon the curved periphery of the block 7 is an outwardly projecting ear 10 which is formed with slots 11 for engagement by the extremities of the member 6, enlargements 12 provided at said extremities being adapted to engage against the opposite sides of the ear 10 to securelyv lock said extremities in position and at the same time to secure tue adjacentedge of the block 7 to said reinforcing member. The recesses l1 communicate with a 'common outwardly opening recess 11 which affords means whereby the extremities of the member 6 may be readily moved into or out of engagement with the recesses 11, as will be readily understood. Thus, through the medium of the reinforc ing member 6, the block 7 is securely but detachably fastened to the mop head, it being clear that detachment of said block may` be readily and expeditiously effected by re- `ymoval of said reinforcing member 6.

Projecting from'the block 7, preferably at an angle thereto, is an operating handle 13, the lower screw-threaded end of said handle engaging a screw-threaded socket 14 formed for th reception thereof in said block 7, as clearly shown in the several views.

A mop constructed as above set forth is durable and'economical in construction and is of high etciency in use. By reason of c thereto:

Also., by reason of this feat-ure, the mop head may be readily detached` when desired, for Washing, and so that the mop may be maintained ina sanitary condition. The mop head is prefer-A ably saturated with oil so as to adapt the same for use not only in performing the functions of an ordinary mop but also as a polislier, the oil serving also to adapt the mop to edectually collect dust, and thus the device is also adapted to serve as a duster.

While lT have illustrated and described the preferred form ot construction for carrying my invention into eiiect, this is capable of variation and modiiication Without departing from the spirit ci the invention. l. therefore: do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth. but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure ,by Letters Patent, is:

l. The combination with a circular absorbent body, having a passage therein; of a. reinforcingl member mounted in said passage: a block carried by said reinforcing member; and a handle secured to said block.

Q'. The combination with an absorbent body having a continuous passage therein; of a block carried by and conforming With said body; a reinforcing member mounted in said passage, '.torretaininpr the body in its operative position and securing` the block and a handle attached to said block.

The combination with a. circular body of absorbent material, having the ends thereof disconnected and a passage extendino completely through said body; of a reinforciner member mounted in said passage; and a block mounted in said body and attached by said reinforcing member.

4. The combination'with a. circular body of absorbent material having the ends thereof disconnected and a passage extending completely through said body; of a reinforcing member mounted in said passage and projecting from the ends thereof; a block encircled by said body and conforming in noenoaa contour to a portion thereof; connections between one side of said block and the reinforcing member; and means whereby the ends of said reinforcing member may be secured to said block.

A mop comprising a circular absorbentbody l'iavinp, an annular opening in the upper edge thereof; an annular broken reintorcing member removably engaging said opening; substantially semi-circular block arranged in said body at the upper edge thereof; diametric perforated ears projectinnl from `said block through perforations in said body into the annular opening; therein for engagement by said reinforcing member; means at the periphery of said block for releasably engaging the extremities of said reinforcing member to maintain the latter in operative position; and a handle connected with and projecting from said block, substantially as described. v

7 A mop comprising a body consisting of a flexible elongated strip having a' coextensive opening formed therein; and strands of absorbent material secured in and depending: from said strip; an annular broken reintorcing member. removably engaging said opening; a substantially semi-circular block arranged in said body coplal'nar with said strip; diametric perforated ears project-ing from said block through perforations in the inner side of said strip into the annular opening therein for engagement by said reinforcing member; means at the periphery of said block for releasably engaging the extremities of said reinforcing member to `maintain the latter' in operative position; and a handle connected with and projecting from said block, substantially as described.
