The invention` consists of the' novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated 1nl the laccompanying drawings, and pointed out in ythe appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, vforming a partv of the specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a packing and shipplng case embodying the invention, taken on the line of'Fig. 2. The lower edge 4of the body 1 has a portion bent outwardly and upwardly `to form an outer fold or bend 5. The bottom 6 is elevated and its outer portion is bent downwardly at 7, outwardly at 8, thence upwardly at `9 anddownwardly at 10, the folded portions 9 and 10 embracing the folded part 5 of the body. A filler 11 is placed upon the bottom 6 and forms a packing for supporting the bottles, jars or like Aretainer 12 is placed upon the filler 11 and has a pendent flange 13 which is confined between the downwardlyextendingportion 7 of the bottom and the lower portion of the body 1. A series of openings are formed in the retainer 12 to receive the lower ends of the bottles 14 or .like receptacles and flanges 15 are pendent from the retainer in line-with the openings and encircle the bottles and rest upon the filler 11. The upper port-ion of the body 1 is bent outwardly, forming an outer fold 16. The rest for the cover comprises a horizontal part 17, a vertical portion 18 and an outer return folded portion 19, which receives the folded part 16 at the upper odge of the body. The cover rest extends completely around the upper edge of the body 1 and serves to stiffen and strengthen the same as well as to support the cover and insure a close joint between said cover and the case.

A cover retainer is located at the upper part of the front of the case and comprises a horizont-al flange 20 and a vertical flange 21, Vthe latter being confined between the upper portion of the body and the vertical part 18 of the cover rest. The horizont-al flange 20 extends through a slot formed in the vertical part 18 of the cover rest near the end thereof. The horizontal portion 20 of the cover retainer is spaced from the horizontal portion 17 of the cover resta distance to receive "the front edge of the cover.

The cover comprises two sections 22 and 23 which are hingedly connected at 24.-, the

section 23 having a portion 25V extending los paratively narrow and is provided for the soley purpose of imparting a longitudinal movement to the section 22, whereby its front end may clear the retainer when opening or closing the section. The bottles 14 or like containers to be placed in the case for storing or transportation are supported upon the filler 11 and prevented from lateral movement by the flanges 15 surrounding the openings in the part 12. A fter the bottles have been placed in position atop retaineris dropped into position and consists of a plateV 31 having openings through which the`necks of the bottles pass, said openings having pendent flanges 32, which embrace the necks of the bottles. A rim 33 extends upwardly from the plate and engages the lower side of the cover, thereby preventing vertical movement of the platefand the bottles. When it is required to release the cover the forward end of the extension 25 of the cover section 23 is lifted, with the result that the section 22 is -moved rearwardly, thereby withdrawing its front edge from beneath the horizont-al portion 20 of the cover retainer and at the same time bringing the notches 29 in .register with the stops 30, after lwhich the cover may be turned upward andswung back out of the way upon the hinge joint 27, the latter also admitting of the cover, or the section 22 thereof, swinging close against the back of the case so asto be out of the way. After the case is filled the cover is swung so as to close upon the rest 17, after which the forwardv extension 25- is pressed down upon the section 22, thereby throwing the latter forwardly to bring its front edge beneath the cover retainer and at the same time throw the notches 29 out of register with the stops 30. Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is

1. A sheet metal case comprising a body having its upper edge port-ion folded, a cover rest comprising vertical and horizontal portions, the vertical portion having its upper part interlocking with the folded edge of the body, cover retainers at opposite sides of the body and comprising vertical and horizontal portions, the vertical portion being held between the body and the vertical portion of the cover rest and the horizontal portion passing through a slot in the vertical portionl of said cover rest and extending over and spaced from the horizontal portion thereof, a cover supported upon the rest and comprising hingedly connected sections, A

A sheet metal case comprising a body having, its upper edge portion folded, a cover rest comprising vertical and horizontal portions, the vertical portion having its upper part interlocking with the folded edge of the body, cover retainersl at opposite sides of the body and comprising vertical land horizontal portions, the vertical portion being held between-the body and' the vertical portion of the cover rest and the horizontal portion passing through a slot in the vertical portion of said cover rest and extending over and spaced from ,the horizontal portion thereof, a cover supported. upon the cover rest and comprising hingedly con-y nected sections, said coverhaving its outer section engaging with the beforementioned cover retainers, and one of the sections having a part extended beyond the hinged joint formed between it and the adjacent section to overlie the latter, and means between the said extended part and the underlying section to secure them and hold the cover sections in alinement.
