13e it known that I, HAROLD H. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at l iamburg, in the county of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVick-Trimmers for Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

rThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in wick trimming attachments for lamp burners.

An object of this invention is the pro.- vision of an attachment which constitutes a shield for the lamp wick and also a means whereby the same can be trimmed and cleaned.

Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use and readily operated.

Vith the above and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the device shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4l is a perspective view of one of the jaws removed.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a conventional form of lamp burner which comprises the usual body portion 11 to the edges of which are secured the oppositely disposed spring clamping fingers 12, while extendingthrough the central portion of the said burner 10 is the wick sleeve 13 in which is disposed the wick 14 operated by means of the pinions 15 keyed to the rotatable pin 16 which carries at its outer end a thumb button 17 by means of which the said pin can be operated to raise or lower the wick let as desired.

The customary wick shield 18 is hinged as at 19 to the upper side of the body 11 of the burner and is provided with the custom- Specification of Letters Patent.

ary latch 20 by means of which it is held against displacement. The upper end of this wick shield 18 is cut ott' as at 21 to produce a supporting ring 22 formed at dialnetrically opposite points longitudinal of the sleeve 13 with registering apertures for receiving pins 22% which support the clipping jaws 25. These jaws are substantially elliptical in plan view, and are concavoconvex in both t 'ansverse and longitudinal sections. The previously mentioned pins 2li extend through registering apertures 27 formed in the extremities of the jaws 25 by means of which the said jaws are pivotally connected for swinging movement relative to each other and to the said ring 22. The numeral 28 designates a spring which is formed at its intermediate portion with an eye 29 for receiving one of the said pins 23, while the opposite ends of the said springs 28 are off-set as at 30 to extend through spaced openings 31 formed in the jaws 25 by means of which the outer edges thereof are yieldingly seated upon the supporting ring 22. The inner edges of the jaws 25 are ofiset as at 32 to produce a slot or passage 33 through which the wick 14 may be passed upon the rotation of the pin 16. The inner edges of the said jaws 25 are beveled as at 34 to produce cutting edges whereby when the wick is inserted therebetween and the jaws moved toward each other the said wick will be severed along a slightly curved line as will be clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

lVhen it is desired to Clean the wick the same is passed through the slot 3B and the jaws are pressed into yielding engagement therewith. The wick is then lowered by means of the pin 1G which obviously frees the same from any undesired foreign matter.

From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that a wick trimming attachment of the nature described is provided for which' will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.

Tt should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described this invention what I claim as new and desire. to protect by Letters Patent, is:

The combination in a lamp burner having a supporting ring attached thereto, of a pair of jaws elliptical in plan View and conczwd convex in longitudinal and cross section,
