J. FORSHEIM.

No. 554,417. Patented Feb. 11, 1896.
EL E5525- W W -W W NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOSEPH FORSHEIM, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 554,417, dated February 1 1, 1896 Application filed September 12, 1895. Serial No. 562,237. (No model.)
' appearance and without the necessity of bending, brazing, or cutting links.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a series of links stretched out in a line. Fig. 2 represents the series connected in an endless chain, as in use. Fig. 3 represents one of the links on an enlarged scale in side elevation and closed. Fig. 4 represents the same in section and opened, and Fig. 5 represents a top plan view of the link.
It is intended that the connecting link or links shall be of the same general appearance as the links which make up the bracelet, so that one or more of the connecting-links may be added as occasion may require, to increase the length of the bracelet.- To this end, whether the link be of annular form, as represented in the accompanying drawings, or any other of the well-known loop-forms in common use, I provide for the temporary removal of a section of the link for the purpose of inserting an adjacent link therein.
The chain of permanent connecting-links is represented by A. Its ends are united by one or more connecting-links A. The connectinglink A is made hollow and hasasection a cut out of it along lines a a oblique to radial lines from the center of the link. The section a is provided with a thin central tongue a a is inserted within the hollow link A and held under compression therein by a stop a its free end resting against the lower side of the tongue a and by its action relative to the portion of the pivot a tending, at all times,
to throw the section a into the space out from the link A to complete the link A. The tongue a is further provided with a tailpiece a at its outer margin which, when the section a is in its normal position, (shown in Figs. 3 and 5,) rests in a narrow slot in the outer face of the link A and serves, when the section a is depressed, as a convenient catch for the end of the thumb or finger to hold the section a open for the purpose of inserting the connecting-link through the permanent links of the bracelet, and further serves to prevent sidewise displacement of the section.
By making the connecting-link uniform with the permanent links of the bracelet, I am enabled to insert one of these links at any point throughout the length of the bracelet at pleasure for purposes of attaching a charm or for any other desired purpose without in any degree interfering with the general uniform appearance of the links which compose the entire bracelet. I may also increase or decrease the length of the bracelet by interposing several of the connecting-links and still maintain the uniform shape of the links and I may remove one or more of several which have been inserted, as may be found desirable. The section which is made removable, it will be observed, is a section in the connecting-link as though a portion of the body of the link itself were cut out and replaced so that it will not present an appearance of a special link except upon a close examination.
What I claim is- A connecting-link, comprising a hollow annular body portion cut away for admitting an adjacent link, an inwardly-swinging section fitted to fill the cut-away portion of the annular body to form a continuous ring of substantially uniform size one of the ends of the body portion and the end of the swinging section adjacent thereto being provided the one with a slot and the other with a tongue fitted to enter the slot, a pintle for hinging the swing ing section to the body portion and located eccentric to the body portion, a spring seated within the hollow link and exerting at all times a pressure upon the swinging section tending to close it and hold it closed and a projection on the swinging section for manipulating it, substantially as set forth.
